Katie Joy got home just after 11am to see ash falling and black smoke outside of her house on Bischoff Road, Hammond Park.

“I looked out the window and saw big black billowing smoke so I got in the car to see where it was and all the bushland was on fire,” she said.

“I was knocking on all of the doors to see if anyone was home and then we just had anyone coming down to help with the hoses.

“It went up in a matter of 10 minutes so we were in trouble.”

Firefighters came to fight the fire, which was brought under control just before 1pm.

Hammond Park resident Eve Richards said her home could’ve been destroyed if it wasn’t for her neighbours’ help.

“I was out Christmas shopping and I started getting messages that there was a fire in Hammond but I thought it wouldn’t be near me,” she said.

“Then I got a message that it was pretty close to my house so I called a neighbour and she said the next door’s caravan had gone up.

“I got home and it was just everywhere. I thought my whole house was going to go if it wasn’t for my neighbours it probably would’ve gone.”

Hammond Park Secondary College student Tyson Utting was among the hundreds of kids evacuated as the fire came close to the school.

“In the bush there was a loud bang,” he said.

“For a whole period we were sitting on the ground to avoid the smoke and then we were evacuated.

“I got home at 12.40pm and saw the fire near my house. When I saw it here I was so worried it was going to burn down the house.”
