Popyrin shows sportsmanship in devastating defeatBy Marc McGowan

Popyrin displays great sportsmanship to applaud his good friend’s final winner of the night and embraces him at the net after a high-quality four-set slugfest, but that was a pretty devastating defeat.

Double faults mortally wounded him in crucial moments of the second and fourth sets, but that mid-court forehand miss on break point in the final game was the costliest of all.

Popyrin has arrived as a force, but you never know when these opportunities will arise again. Tiafoe advances to a quarter-final against Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov.

Tiafoe beats Popyrin in four sets

And there it is.

American Frances Tiafoe has beaten Aussie Alexei Popyrin in four sets 6-4, 7-6 (6-3), 2-6, 6-3.

Still a tournament to be hugely proud of for Popyrin, who soared to new heights in this grand slam.

Taifoe will next meet big-serving Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals.

Rich pickings: What the winner collects

Although there’s a lot more at stake here, let’s talk money.

In Australian terms, the result of this fourth round match at the US Open is worth about $300,000 to the winner.

By making the round of 16, both players are guaranteed $US325,000 ($479,000), but the winner will pocket at least $US530,000 ($782,000) by making the quarter-finals.

Beyond that, the big money really starts to roll in. A semi-final berth is worth $US1 million ($1.48 million), while the tournament’s runner-up collects $US1.8 million ($2.66 million) and the winner walks away with $US3.6 million ($5.3 million).

The prize money matrix is the same for the women’s draw.

The comeback is on in earnestBy Marc McGowan

Even if there is a long way to go.

Popyrin canes a backhand down-the-line return winner to go 5-2 up after dropping the first two sets despite being on top at different stages of both. We are going to learn a whole lot about the 196cm Sydneysider in the next hour.
