A Corio man is dead after a fatal stabbing in Geelong on Sunday morning, prompting businesses to call for action over violence at local nightclubs.

Corio resident Jayme Sykes, 20, was killed following what is believed to be an altercation between two groups of men which started in a nightspot in Geelong’s Little Malop Street.

Police said a man with stab wounds was found on Little Malop Street at about 5.30am on Sunday after being wounded nearby. The man was taken to hospital but later died.

Two other men who police believe were involved in the altercation took themselves to hospital and were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Nine News reported police had spoken with the men and that a person who was with Sykes was also injured and had spoken with police.

Police have not yet laid charges and have not said if the two men questioned are suspects or if they are searching for anyone else.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and investigations remain ongoing,” police said in a statement on Sunday.

SES members were also seen combing the area on Sunday. They were believed to be searching for a weapon used in the altercation.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who can help with their inquiries and asked them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report to the crimestoppersvic.com.au website.

Friends and family of Sykes paid tribute to him on Sunday and mourned that a man so young had lost his life.

“Words can’t describe the pain of losing not just a close mate but one of the most beautiful-hearted blokes that have walked this earth,” a friend wrote on social media.

Nine News reports that a number of local businesses on and near Little Malop Street were forced to close or could only trade for a few hours on Sunday as the area was a crime scene, with a camera shot showing dried blood spattered against a concrete bollard.

Restaurant manager Alex Smith told Nine News he was not surprised someone had died as violence and anti-social behaviour stemming from nearby nightspots was a common occurrence.

“I’m not surprised something has happened,” Smith told Nine News.

“There was a glassing last weekend just around the corner. It is happening all the time.

“The cops are doing nothing about it. Something needs to happen and it needs to happen now.”
