Gigi Hadid's 2024 Met Gala Dress Took Over 13500 Hours to Create

If there’s one thing about Gigi Hadid, she knows how to nail a theme, and the 2024 Met Gala was no exception.

This year, for “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the supermodel is joining Thom Browne in The Garden of Time. Last night, Hadid wore an unmistakably Browne look: a white off-the-shoulder corset dress with exaggerated hips, layered underneath a white silk moiré coat with black duchesse satin tipping and festooned with 3D yellow roses worn around her hips. With an intense focus on every minute detail, the entire look took a team of more than 70 people over 13,500 hours to make entirely by hand and will live in Browne’s permanent archive following the Met Gala.

“It’s always a privilege to watch Gigi come to life,” Browne says. “She is a true talent that shines at whatever she does. I wanted her look to embody the fragility and immense work that you see in Andrew [Bolton]’s exhibit, blooming on the carpet and into The Metropolitan Museum of Art.”

Featuring thorn appliqués, the garden of yellow roses was artfully splashed across Hadid’s look. The outer layer’s voluminous skirt alone took a team of 40 people more than 8,500 hours to embroider. The corset dress was also an impressive feat of craftsmanship; a team of 20 artisans spent 5,000 hours hand-embroidering 2.8 million micro bugle beads onto the dress.

“In my final fitting, I finally got to see the 3D pieces and just hold them,” Hadid tells Vogue. “Just one rose on my outfit in itself is a work of art, and the amount of hours and people’s work that went into this dress is just incredible. It’s an honor for me to be able to present this for them, and I always walk the carpet with that in mind. I’m very proud of their work.”

Hadid’s stylist, Mimi Cuttrell, was inspired by garden statues wrapped in plants. “I work very visually, so Pinterest is the best tool when sourcing images to aid in curating the perfect look,” she says. “We focused on statues and structured stone columns in a garden with vines and floral details for Gigi’s look, and I was so inspired through references of ancient Italian gardens. I love how the light reflects beautiful yellow tones against the stone, which inspired the direction of yellow jewelry to accompany her look.”

Hadid first attended the Met Gala in 2015 for “China: Through the Looking Glass,” dressed in a fire engine red DVF dress. Ever since then, she’s continued to wow us with her invigorating, fashion-forward looks that never sacrifice the dress code for style. Over her eight Mets, the shapeshifting model has rocked a sweeping burgundy Versace puffer coat, donned a birdlike Michael Kors Collection suit, and channeled her inner Jessica Rabbit in Prada.

“This, as someone in the fashion industry, is like my favorite night of the year,” Hadid says. “It’s like our prom. It’s where we get to have the most fun and go a little bit crazy. We’re not doing it as a job—we’re there to create together and raise money for The Met to preserve works of art like this. So I think every year I just have so much fun looking around and seeing how different creatives take on the theme.”
