A first-home buyer couple splashed a record-breaking $1.11m on a Tarneit house at a Good Friday Appeal auction held in aid of the Royal Children’s Hospital today.

More than 100 tradies and suppliers donated labour and resources to build the four-bedroom Monferrato Ave home which was constructed by Henley Properties, on land gifted by Villawood Properties and located in its Alamora estate.

All proceeds from the no-reserve auction, an annual event, are given to the RCH.

Out of six to seven bidders who contested this year’s auction, husband and wife Mohish Waitha and Sonam Pala won the double-storey residence’s keys.

Ray White Cheltenham’s Greg Brydon, who was the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s 2023 Senior Auctioneer of the Year, called the auction which kicked off with a $600,000 bid.

But the hammer came down on a figure almost double that amount which also topped the Good Friday Appeal auction’s previous $1.082m record, set in 2022.

Mr Waitha and Ms Pala said they currently lived in a small townhouse in Melbourne’s north and were looking forward to making the most of the Tarneit pad’s large backyard, stylish kitchen and walk-in wardrobes.

“We feel great, as soon as we walked in we knew it would be our place,” Mr Waitha said.

Good Friday Appeal board member Peter Clark said the sales result had exceeded expectations.

“It was very nice to see just how generous the bidders were in pushing up the price, it was a brilliant result for us,” he added.

About $70,000 worth of furniture, appliances, televisions and decor on display in the house were included in the sale.

Villawood Properties chief executive Alan Miller said a large crowd had turned out to watch the auction.

“It’s been an exciting event and really highlighted what the Good Friday Appeal is all about,” he said.

Henley Properties marketing general manager, Tindi Sorbera, said the record-breaking result could not have been achieved without the generous assistance of the tradespeople and suppliers who contributed to the house.
