Harbour Bridge traffic at standstill after double fatal crash

Harbour Bridge

Two men have died after a bus and three cars collided on the Harbour Bridge, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Emergency services were called to the crash, with 11 NSW Ambulance paramedics and several firefighters and police officers deployed.

A crime scene has been established, with officers from the Crash Investigations Unit at the accident site.

All southbound traffic on the bridge is closed, as are three out of four northbound lanes.

Police said the bus driver was uninjured, while no passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash. A NSW Ambulance helicopter was seen landing on the bridge about 2pm.

Police said a motorcyclist who drove through the crime scene while patients were being treated had been arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station, where he was assisting officers with their inquiries.

Footage showed several police officers apprehending the man during the arrest.

Separate footage filmed on the bridge shows at least two hatchbacks and an SUV with significant damage blocking several lanes.

A number of people can be seen assessing the damage from the crash, with one man reaching into the driver’s side window of a white Hyundai hatchback with its front end smashed in.

A photograph taken on the bridge shows a blue hatchback with its front smashed in and airbags deployed as firefighters assess a Lexus SUV nearby.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Sydney Buses said southbound services to the city would end at North Sydney or Macquarie Park, while northbound buses from the city would terminate in the CBD.

Commuters are encouraged to use train and Metro services, which are unaffected.

More to come.
