A police operation on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has caused lengthy traffic delays as commuters are urged to work from home.

As of 7am on Tuesday, one southbound lane and one northbound lane were closed with drivers told to exercise caution and expect significant delays.

'Traffic is at a standstill - nothing's moving and the commute over the bridge could take up to an hour. Work from home if you can,' one nearby resident said.

'It's been chaos, cars are trying to skip the traffic and cut off others to get into the Harbour Tunnel which is now backed up as well. It hasn't moved now in well over 20 minutes and there's no way of turning around once you're already on the freeway.

'It's car-mageddon out there - and drivers are getting really frustrated!'

It's believed to be a self-harm incident that caused the delay.

Footage from the scene shows vehicles at a complete standstill as several police cars with flashing lights block traffic on a southbound lane.

'A police operation is underway on the Sydney Harbour Bridge,' a NSW Police spokesperson said at 7am on Tuesday.

'Significant traffic delays are expected, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.'

Live Traffic is urging drivers to be careful and expect delays during their commute.

There is no threat to community safety.
