Heartstopper season three has already been confirmed — which is lucky, as the second season of the coming-of-age drama stole our hearts again on Netflix.

The heartwarming LGBTQ+ show returned for an eight-episode run on August 3, showing Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie's (Joe Locke) blossoming romance and the rest of the Truman and Higgs gang.

But what does the future hold for the Heartstopper lovebirds and their pals? Here's everything you need to know about Heartstopper season three.

Heartstopper season 3 potential release date: When will Heartstopper season 3 on Netflix?

When Netflix shared the news of Heartstopper season two, it also confirmed that the show, based on Alice Oseman's graphic novel series, would also get a third season.

The official Netflix Twitter account posted a short clip of Oseman drawing an illustration of Charlie and Nick, writing underneath: "2 more seasons."

When that third season will arrive is something we have slightly less clarity on. Rumours have indicated that filming on the third season could begin as soon as October 2023, according to What's on Netflix, but this hasn't been officially confirmed.

The production likely won't be affected by the ongoing strike action in Hollywood, as Heartstopper is a UK production.

So, if the filming does go ahead, based on the release schedule of the second season, we could expect to see Nick and Charlie as soon as late 2024.

Heartstopper season 3 cast: Who's coming back for Heartstopper season 3?

We've yet to receive any major casting announcements, but it's safe to say Heartstopper wouldn't be the show it is without Kit Connor and Joe Locke returning as Nick and Charlie.

As the pair take their relationship to the next level, they'll be cheered on by best friends Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Isaac (Tobie Donovan).

Going by Oseman's graphic novels, we could expect much of the main cast to return for season three, with the big names:

Heartstopper season 3 plot: What will happen in Heartstopper season 3?

The second season ends with a poignant moment between Nick and Charlie, as Charlie tells Nick how deeply he was affected by horrific homophobic bullying at school after he came out. Nick then very, very nearly tells Charlie he loves him.

When Charlie then walks home, he types out the message to Nick — "i love you" — and the season ends with his finger hovering over the send button.

Going off Oseman's books, we have a general sense of what could unfold in the third season of Heartstopper. The first season spans the first two volumes of Oseman's series, whereas the second season follows the school's trip to Paris, which happens in the third volume of the graphic novel series.

We can then expect the show's third season to follow Oseman's fourth volume of the series, in which Charlie and Nick both go to college.

Ahead of the release of the second season, Oseman was asked for a one-word description of the third season and replied: "Love."

Joe Locke said in the production notes that he doesn't have any of the storyline details on the next season yet, but added: "I want to see some Charlie and Mr Ajayi scenes. That was one thing I wished was in season two that we just didn't have time for."

Yasmin Finney added: "I'm just super, super happy and proud of all of us. And yeah, bring on season three."

Sadly, we'll have to wait on filming on Heartstopper season three to begin and news of a release date before we get ahead of ourselves with a trailer.
