IND 143/4

Jaiswal hits it through the covers for a boundary! After a long time, the ball races towards the ropes. Mehidy wouldn’t have liked that, especially after bowling a couple of good overs. Five off the over.

IND 138/4

Nahid Rana returns for another spell. The pacer does well and lets fly some great deliveries, almost catching a nick off Rahul’s bat.

IND 137/4

Mehidy with his spin. Almost went away with a maiden but for a single in the last ball. Just the one run.

IND 136/4

Taskin begins with a dot ball. Just the one run from the over. The scoring rate has gone down a bit.

IND 135/4

Mehidy bowling his sixth over. A single to end the over. KL Rahul played on the defensive in this over.

IND 132/4

Rahul pushes the ball towards cover but the slow outfield means the batters have to run three. Jaiswal drives towards long off and gets to his fifty in 95 balls! Terrific innings.

IND 126/4

However, Taskin continues from the other end. Jaiswal smacks the ball towards cover and gets a boundary. Jaiswal has played some cracking shots today.

IND 120/4

Spin is back. Mehidy Hasan for his second spell. He keeps the lines straight, and Rahul defends the whole over.

IND 120/4

Rahul gets his first boundary of the innings. A straight drive off Nahid’s fuller length delivery. Sweetly timed shot. Too many four byes for Bangladesh. On this occasion, a bouncer by Nahid is way too far of reach for both Rahul and the keeper.

IND 111/4

This Mahmud vs Jaiswal battle has been interesting. While Jaiswal has hit him for boundaries, the bowler has also gone past his outside edge a couple of times. But with Jaiswal looking much more comfortable now, Mahmud is getting his line wrong - bowling too much on the pads.

IND 103/4

Jaiswal is looking very comfortable at the crease right now. He’s into his 40s now and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

IND 97/4

OUT! Rishabh Pant is gone. Hasan Mahmud once again strikes. Pant had smashed the previous delivery for four past point. On the next delivery, he once again tried to cut the ball outside off, but this time gets a faint edge straight to the keeper. Pant falls for 39 off 52 balls.

KL Rahul in at number six. He’s off the mark with a single.

IND 92/3

Nahid for his fifth over. The pacer bowls a no-ball, but Rishabh flicks it towards the leg side for a single. Yashasvi tries to slash it but misses the shot as the ball is collected by Liton Das.

IND 88/3

Hasan Mahmud is back for his second spell. First two balls, dots. A maiden over to begin the post-lunch session.

1st session summary

The first hour belonged to Bangladesh and the next belonged to India. Hasan Mahmud’s opening spell rocked the Indian top order as he picked the three wickets removing Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in quick succession. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant helped India recover from the early jolt. The duo ran hard and kept finding boundaries at regular intervals. They have crossed 50 runs in their partnership and are looking quite comfortable now.

ICYMI: Here’s a bit about Hasan Mahmud, who took India’s three wickets so far

IND v BAN: Who is Hasan Mahmud, the Bangladesh pacer who removed Rohit, Kohli in first Test?

Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud picked up three wickets in his opening spell in the first Test against India at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

IND 88/3

Mehidy comes in for his third over. Just two runs from the last over of the first session, as the players break for lunch.

IND 86/3

Taskin bowling his ninth over. Another chance goes begging for the Tigers! Rishabh catches a thick edge but the ball seemed to be quite short for Shadman at the slips. The ball went to the ropes for a boundary as the 50 came up in the partnership.

September 19, 2024 11:20

4

IND 81/3

Rishabh faces Mehidy and hits a four towards the covers. Five off the over. After that smashing boundary off the first ball, the Indians defended well.

IND 76/3

Taskin with the ball. Rishabh doesn’t go through with his pull shot as the ball just falls before Shakib Al Hasan, as the allrounder smiles. A chance missed for Bangladesh to remove a dangerous Rishabh.

IND 75/3

Shanto brings in the first spinner of the day in Mehidy Hasan. After a dot ball, Yashasvi hammers it towards the covers for a four! Back-to-back boundaries as the southpaw sweeps it square. A lucrative over for the Indians against spin. A sign for things to come?

IND 67/3

Taskin comes in for his seventh over, and right at the off, Rishabh hits him for a cover drive. The timing isn’t ideal as the fielder is able to save it from touching the ropes. Just the two runs in the first ball, followed by five dots.

September 19, 2024 11:01

4

IND 65/3

Nahid back. First ball is a bit short as Yashasvi jumps and cuts it to square, only to find a fielder at the ropes. Lovely shot from Rishabh! He pulls Nahid to backward square leg for a boundary.

IND 59/3

Taskin Ahmed back for his sixth over. An overthrow there! Initially, Yashasvi was hesitant to take a run, which forced Rishabh to rush back to his crease. However, an overthrow allowed the Indian batters to take a single quite comfortably. A dot ball to end the over and just a couple of singles off it.

September 19, 2024 10:54

4

IND 57/3

Pant has been brilliant early in his innings. Full ball by Nahid and he punches it towards cover for four! Now Jaiswal gets a full ball on the pads and he pushes it towards midwicket. However, the outfield is slow and the batters run a double.

IND 50/3

Jaiswal finds yet another boundary. This time walks down the wicket and pushes the ball towards midwicket for four. Interestingly, Bangladesh pacers haven’t troubled the left-handers a lot in comparison with right handers.

September 19, 2024 10:41

4

IND 46/3

SHOT! Bouncer by Nahid and Pant square cuts it over point for four. Brilliant shot. Jaiswal and Pant steal a quick single. Pant just taps the ball into the pitch. Jaiswal had to put in the dive to get back into the crease. Close call.

IND 40/3

Pant is off the mark. He pushes the ball towards midwicket. At first he thought the ball was going towards the boundary. The fielder chases the ball and both Pant and Jaiswal had a slight confusion whether to take the third run. They eventually did but could’ve been a disastrous run out.

IND 36/3

Change in bowling, Nahid Rana into the attack. The 6ft 3 bowler is testing Jaiswal with some short stuff. Now Pant tries to pull his bouncer but is beaten. He’s quick.

IND 34/3

OUT! Kohli is also out. Hasan is bowling a spell of his lifetime. Lures Kohli into the drive and induces an edge straight to the keeper. He’s out for 6.

Rishabh Pant in at number five. Terrific over. India in trouble.

IND 34/2

Kohli is busy early in his innings. First he plays with soft hands in the gap between gully and point to get a double. Then he pushes the ball towards midwicket and runs three.

September 19, 2024 10:10

W

IND 29/2

OUT! Shubman Gill is gone. Hasan gets another. Way outside the leg stump. Gill wanted to flick the ball but gets an edge instead and the keeper makes no mistake. Two early blows for India. Eight-ball duck for Gill.

Virat Kohli at four. He’s off the mark with a single. Flicks towards fine leg.

September 19, 2024 10:06

4

IND 24/1

Jaiswal with a wonderful drive towards cover. A touch fuller by Tasking on this occasion and Jaiswal just slaps the ball towards the fence. He ends the over with another beautiful shot, this time on-drive for four.

September 19, 2024 09:58

W

IND 14/1

OUT! Rohit Sharma is gone. It was coming. Hasan did trouble Rohit in the previous over. Good length, on the 4th stump. Nipped away from Rohit. He had to play the ball and gets the outside edge straight to slip.

Shubman Gill in at three. He’s beaten on the outside edge off the very first ball as he goes for a frontfoot defence. A wicket maiden.

IND 14/0

Now Jaiswal too gets his first boundary. Taskin bowls a fuller delivery, swinging into the left hander. Jaiswal beautifully pushes the ball past the mid on. Wristy.

IND 8/0

Ball is moving quicker through the air and Rohit is struck on the back pad. A huge appeal for LBW but the umpire doesn’t give it. Bangladesh review it but the ball tracking shows umpire’s call on wickets. Terrific delivery but Rohit survives. In this over, Hasan has attacked the area around the off stump more. A much better over this. However, Rohit ends the over with a four off the last ball. Square drives the ball to get the first boundary of the series.

IND 4/0

Taskin too is asking Rohit to drive the ball towards covers. And then he brings one into the batter! He’s struck on the thigh pad, but the ball is over the stumps for Bangladesh to appeal. Rohit is off the mark with a single off his 11th delivery.

IND 2/0

Hasan Mahmud is sharing the new ball with Tasking. He keeps the attack outside off, trying to lure Rohit into drive but the Indian captain is patiently letting the ball go.

IND 1/0

Taskin Ahmed with the new ball. Jaiswal on strike. Top of off and Jaiswal cuts it but the gully fielder saves it. First runs on the board as Jaiswal tucks the ball towards deep fine leg for a single. Quick and bounce on offer. A good over for Taskin.

All set

We are done with the national anthems. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are walking into the field. Bangladesh fielders are already there.

Keep an eye on these milestones during the series

From Virat Kohli inching closer to Sachin Tendulkar to Ravindra Jadeja reaffirming his status as an ace all-rounder, plenty of milestones to watch out for in this series.

IND vs BAN: Which Tendulkar record could Kohli break during India vs Bangladesh Test series

From Virat Kohli inching closer to Sachin Tendulkar to Ravindra Jadeja reaffirming his status as an ace all-rounder, here’s a list of milestones to watch out for during the India vs. Bangladesh Test series.

“It is an honour that we have got Jasprit Bumrah playing for us”

Ahead of his first Test assignment as India head coach, Gautam Gambhir cut to the chase in typical fashion, mincing no words in extolling pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had finally dispelled the nation of its obsession with batters, as the best fast bowler going around in all three formats.

It is an honour that we have got Jasprit Bumrah playing for us, says Gambhir ahead of first India vs Bangladesh Test

Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir labelled Jasprit Bumrah as the best all-format fast bowler in the world

Playing XIs

India - Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj

Bangladesh - Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das(w), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana

Toss - Bangladesh

Bangladesh wins the toss and opts to bowl first. Bangladesh going in with three seamers.

India playing with three seamers and two spinners - Bumrah, Akash Deep, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja.

Pitch report

Very cool at the moment but as the day progresses, it promises to be 33-34 degrees. It’s red soil pitch which means bounce, turn, and spinners will come into play as the game progresses. They have left a little bit of residual moisture underneath the pitch. So, the fast bowlers will have their say at the start, reckons Dinesh Karthik.

What to expect from Chepauk pitch?

The match will be played on a red-soil pitch, which is not the typical surface the venue usually offers. It is likely to assist the pacers with its good bounce and carry, and the spinners could come into play at a later stage in the match when the pitch breaks under the sun.

Weather update

A lot of areas in Chennai received showers early morning. It’s still overcast over the M.A Chidambaram Stadium.

Chennai to host a Test after a three-year gap!

The venue last hosted a Test back in 2021, in which India comfortably beat England by 317 runs on the back of Ravichandran Ashwin’s century and eight-wicket match-haul.

How do Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma fare against spin?

Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, has emerged as one of the top spin-bowling sides. Since 2022, its spinners have taken 154 of the team’s 274 wickets, averaging 30.94 per wicket. In comparison, India has struggled against spin during this period, losing a wicket every 60 balls and managing just 34 runs per dismissal. Notably, Bangladesh’s batting average of 35.4 slightly surpasses India’s.

IND vs BAN: What is Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s record vs spin in Tests?

For India to assert dominance over Bangladesh’s spinners, much will hinge on how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli handle them.

What can we expect from India’s return to red-ball cricket?

Just less than eight months ago, when England visited India for a five-match Test series, armed with its newfangled ‘Bazball’ rhetoric, the air was humming with how the host’s spinners would face a litmus test in trying to contain an aggressive brand of cricket and maintain their dominance at home.

But when India takes on Bangladesh in the first Test here at the M.A. Chidambaram from Thursday, the tables will turn, and the exigencies of the longest format will be more fundamental as the host batters gear up for a trial by spin posed by a side riding high on a morale-boosting coup in Pakistan.

India will need to make the most of the five upcoming Tests at home (two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand) before they face a sterner test of keeping Australia at bay in their backyard later in the year.
