The toss was supposed to take place at 1pm IST but it was delayed due to a wet outfield at SuperSport Park in Centurion. An inspection took place at 1.30pm IST and toss is now set to take place 1.45pm IST, play scheduled to start at 2pm. Prasidh Krishna has been handed his debut cap.

It's tough to win in South Africa. For India, it gets tougher. Their batters have one of the worst records here, their spinners rarely have any sort of impact in these conditions. As a team, they have never won a Test series in South Africa. Since 1996, India have played 23 Tests in South Africa and won only 4 and never more than once in a series. Despite this, they are the third-most successful team in South Africa behind Australia and England. That's how tough it is to play South Africa in South Africa. But having said that, India have given South Africa a run for their money pretty much every time they have toured here in the last 10 years or so. In fact, the last time India went there, many believed they were the stronger of the two teams. And they did pretty well too but resurgent performances by South Africa in the fourth innings, denied India twice in the series.

What about this time? Rohit Sharma will be leading for the first time. India don't have either Ajinkya Rahane or Cheteshwar Pujara - both dropped. Mohammed Shami is out with an injury and so is Rishabh Pant, who was a prolific run-scorer during India's last tour. But they do have Virat Kohli, who averages more than 50 here. They do have three exciting young batters - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who will be playing their first Test in South Africa. Jasprit Bumrah is as lethal as he ever was. Mohammed Siraj has his tail up. And South Africa? Well, they are still not the same as they once used to be. Captain Temba Bavuma is always under pressure, Dean Elgar will be playing in his farewell series, there are concerns over the fitness of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Does that mean India once again have a golden opportunity to conquer their toughest summit? Yes, in a way. At least the Indian fans would like to believe it that way.

South Africa got off to a good start with three wickets in the first 11 overs However, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then saw India through to Lunch India were 91/3 in 26 overs at Lunch with Iyer and Kohli putting on 67 off 93KL Rahul is playing in the middle order and will be India's wicketkeeperPrasidh Krishna is making his Test debut as India's third seamer

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: The first session

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Well the ball was doing everything and Kagiso Rabada was making it talk. However, India's first wicket fell really out of a personal error from Rohit Sharma, going for that pull shot that reaps so many dividends for him but putting it straight down the throat of the man at long leg. Rabada had got the breakthrough and then Nandre Burger got Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal out. It meant that India were shaking around at 24/3 in the 12th over but after that, Kohli and Iyer made the most dropped catches that each of them got and the leg and middle linds that the South Africans bowled to them, rather puzzlingly. It might not be a surprise at all if the Proteas stop doing that in the second session and make life a little more difficult for the batters.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: SIX! What a shot that is from Iyer!

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: First ball of the 25th from Coetzee, half volley on the pads which is bread and butter for a batter of Iyer's level. It was a nonchalant flick but he timed it so well that it ended up going a six over square leg. May have been a straightforward shot but that was done so well that it produced an extraordinary result.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: 50-partnership between Kohli and Iyer

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: They have now put up 51 in 71 balls. Well Elgar is getting the ball checked with the umpires now. Kohli is on 26 off 41, Iyer is looking good on 23 off 34. This is an important innings for the latter, there were a lot of questions that came up on his technique in Test cricket despite the average he has managed in his short career. But he is looking quite comfortable today. Hardly any chances from Kohli as well.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Rohit Sharma's thoughts

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: “Wasn't too sure (on batting or bowling). We are quite aware of the conditions, we have been here a few times. We need to put runs on the board and the bowlers will do the job for us. We do understand the challenge of batting first with the overhead conditions and the grass, but the guys are up for the challenge. Everytime we come here, we come with high hopes. We've come close in the last 2 tours. We are pretty confident with our squad and the make-up of our squad. We are playing with four seamers and a spinner. Ashwin is playing in place of Jadeja. Jaddu had a bit of a back spasm, so Ashwin comes in and he is a quality spinner to have. Prasidh is making his debut, along with the other pacers Shardul, Siraj and Bumrah.”

There has been a debate about whether India will fill the Mohammed Shami hole with Prasidh or Mukesh Kumar. "Prasidh is a promising prospect, but we have to be realistic that this is his first Test match. He hasn't had a lot of first-class cricket to fall back on because of a number of reasons. But I'm hoping he has a good game and enjoys himself. It's such a lovely moment when we give out a new cap to someone," he said. That should solve the puzzle.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Players, and a legend, warming up

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Quite a few damp spots on the pitch which are being dried out with a hair-dryer. The players are warming up and well, there is a former player warming up as well. Rahul Dravid rolled his arms for a few balls, much to the amusement of his wards and the broadcasters and everyone watching. The great man does have one Test wicket, and that too of West Indies' Ridley Jacobs while he was batting on 118 in 2002. Wonder if a shock return is on the cards. Probably not. However, Dravid did seem to let slip that India will be handing a debut cap today in his interview with the broadcasters....

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah in South Africa

It was in this country, remember, that Bumrah made his Test debut and showed the world that he is the real deal and not just a T20I four-over burst bowler. He took one wicket in the first innings of his first Test in Cape Town, and that was of none other than the great AB de Villiers just when the former South African looked set for yet another masterful century. He has taken 127 more wickets in the format since then and South Africa has been a happy hunting ground for him. Bumrah has taken 26 wickets in Tests played in the country in six matches at an average of 24.38.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Pitch report

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Good covering of grass. Teams tend to bat first because it tends to start a bit slow. As the Test progresses, there might be a bit of up and down movement which could be tricky to handle. Batting will get difficult as the Test progresses. With the weather conditions, South Africa would be tempted to go without a spinner. With the sun out, the pitch tends to crack a bit more and get the spinners into play. Don't expect the pitch to change too much across the Test. The best approach is bat first, guts it out in the first two session and be happy if you're just 2 down at Lunch.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: India's last Test series in South Africa

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Or the end of the Virat Kohli era. Kohli didn't retire of course, on the contrary he seems to have rediscovered his mojo since that series. But, he stepped down as India's Test captain after the third and final Test in that series ended on January 14. With some of South Africa's greats having retired and India looking arguably their strongest in their Test history away from home, this was seen as the latters' best chance to end their drought in South Africa. They won the first Test but the young South African side trounced them in the second and third. By the time the final day came around, the Indians were a frustrated lot, snapping at the broadcasters through stump mics due to reviews that went against them. They won the first Test, as mentioned earlier, by 113 runs. Then they lost the second and third by seven wickets each. Kohli had already stepped down as India's T20I captain and had also been removed from the position in ODIs. He had also stepped down from captaincy of RCB in the IPL. With this series, he officially went back to being a player. And as he has shown in the months since, a player as vital to India's cause as ever.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: There is about an hour to go for the toss and it remains quite cloud in Centurion. Rain hasn't started yet but it is expected to do so in an hour which means that it is safe to assume still that toss would be delayed. Moreover, it has been raining here before today and while the pitch and infield was covered, the outfield wasn't. So it remains to be seen if the ground will be dry enough for cricket even if it doesn't rain.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: The last India vs South Africa Test in Centurion

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: Now India were at the wrong end of the result the second time they played in Centurion, which led to captain Virat Kohli being at his fiery best, or worst depending on how you look at it, in the post-match press conference. But they tasted success the last time they played here. India batted first adn KL Rahul scored 123 in a 117-run opening stand with Mayank Agarwal, with the latter scoring 60. Captain Kohli then made 35 while Ajinkya Rahane made 48 as India were all out for 327. Lungi Ngidi ended with figures of 6/71 in his 24 overs. The Indian pacers were unleashed after that with Mohammed Shami picking five, Mohammed Siraj taking one while Jasprit Bumrah and Shardul Thakur took two wickets each. India then scored 174 in their second innings and set a target of 305 for South Africa to chase. While captain Elgar scored 77, there was precious little from the others as Bumrah, Shami and Siraj ran through the Proteas lineup. Bumrah and Shami picked three wickets each while Siraj got two. Ravichandran Ashwin finished the job by knocking off the last two wickets. Rahul won the player of the match, although there were many who felt that the award should've gone to Shami.

India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test: First things first, the weather forecast for today and tomorrow in Centurion is not that promising. Rain is likely to play spoilsort right through Day 1 and Day 2. India's practice session was completely washed out because of rain yesterday and it is very much possible that there will be multiple stoppages due to rain and wet outfield today. What that also means is that there will be a lot on offer for the seamers. Not that the fast bowlers need weather to help them in Centurion but it will sure add to the discomfort of the batters.

And no matter how much we try, it is kind of difficult to put our minds away from the loss in the World Cup final. But as captain Rohit Sharma said, a Test series win in South Africa, something which India have never achieved, may not be enough to cover up for the loss in the World Cup final but it will surely be a red-letter day in the history of the Indian team.

The two-match Test series begins with the Boxing Day Test at the Supersport Park in Centurion.
