With India at 0-72 with a lead of 118, Jaiswal whipped Starc high over mid-wicket off a straight ball for four, which fired up the Australian fastbowler.

Fox Cricket’s Kerry O’Keeffe lauded Jaiswal’s wrist work as he punished Starc for bowling too direct.

“The cheat sheets would have said don’t get too straight to this young bloke or you will go the distance,” O’Keeffe said.

“This is a terrific cricket shot. Starc got a little too straight and he is one of the best whippers in world cricket. Fantastic cricket from Jaiswal.”

England great Michael Vaughan predicted the shot would fire Starc up and the pair were involved in a running battle for the rest of the over.

“He is just working with the angle and it’s beautiful pick-up,” Vaughan said.

“It’s a big boundary out there, one bounce four. This could turn into a bit of chin music.

“I’ve seen Mitchell Starc bowl some explosive spells bowling the short stuff. But they need to change something up.”

Starc responded well to beat the bat later in the over, which caused him to shake his head and chuckle as Jaiswal responded by shaking his own head.

Off the next ball Jaiswal produced a textbook backfoot defensive shot, which prompted a chirp from the Australian fastbowler.

Standing his ground, Jaiswal hit right back at Starc

“It’s coming too slow,” Jaiswal he said.

Earlier, moments before the exchange, respected Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle questioned how skipper Rohit Sharma would fit back into the team if KL Rahul and Jaiswal both scored big on day two, before they were interrupted by the youngster’s stunning boundary.

“Michael you said something interesting, if KL Rahul gets a hundred or a 70 or 80, he is opening the batting in Adelaide,” Bhogle said.

“So who isn’t? Jaiswal is looking alright.”

“Rohit Sharma can bat No.3,” Fellow commentator Michael Vaughan said.

Jaiswal broke up the discussion with the scorching four off middle stump that went high in the air and bounced just before the rope in the deep.

“Oh well, when you have someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal, that shot is around the corner, except that I didn’t imagine he would play it against Mitchell Starc at this giant of a stadium,” Bhogle said.

The 22-year-old only debuted for India against the West Indies last year and has scored 1,407 runs at an average of 56.28, with three centuries and eight 50s in 14 Tests to date.
