Former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne has spoken publicly for the first time since he successfully appealed sexual assault convictions, just moments after the charges against him were officially withdrawn.

Mr Hayne has always maintained his innocence and the Director of Public Prosecution earlier this week confirmed they would no longer seek to prosecute him after a woman accused him of sexual assault in her Newcastle home in 2018.

The 36-year-old's two counts of sexual intercourse without consent convictions were quashed on appeal earlier this month and he was released from prison on bail hours later.

Today the Crown said in court that it would take no further proceedings against Mr Hayne and his bail conditions were discontinued.

After leaving court, a smiling Mr Hayne told waiting media he was "excited" and "thankful" for the support he has received.

"I stayed true to myself the whole time," an emotional Mr Hayne told reporters outside Downing Centre Local Court.

"Today is a bit of vindication for myself, my family and my loved ones, so I just want to say thank you to all those who supported me from day one, stood by me and stood next to me.

"It's been a rollercoaster.

"The boys in the inside who stood by me, my mates on the outside, everyone that stood shoulder to shoulder with me. I appreciate that."

Mr Hayne also thanked supporters who prayed for him.

"Thank God for keeping me sane through this season — not only myself but my wife as well, and what she had to go through," he said.

"It's been tough."
