South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou's time at the club could be at the end of its tether after a poor start to the season.

According to 9News and Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas, the club has called for an internal review of its football operations under Demetriou after the Rabbitohs' round-six fixture against the Sharks on Saturday night.

The decision follows the Rabbitohs' embarrassing 34-4 loss to the Warriors on Saturday.

"The club's power brokers are concerned with the direction the club is heading under Jason Demetriou," Chammas said on Nine's Sunday afternoon football coverage.

Demetriou inherited the Bunnies from Wayne Bennett at the end of 2021 and has since re-signed with the club until 2026 but Chammas revealed that his contract includes a nine-month termination pay-out.

This means that the club would only need to pay out Demetriou for nine months if they were to terminate his contract prematurely.

South Sydney's board is set to meet on Tuesday, April 30.

"There is every chance that if South Sydney doesn't get the results against Cronulla, Jason Demetriou's time at the club could be numbered," Chammas said.

If Demetriou and the Bunnies were to part ways, two choices for his replacement could include Bennett and Craig Bellamy — both experienced coaches who are not locked in for next season.

"The club feels they need an experienced coach given that they are struggling at the moment under Jason Demetriou," Chammas said.

Getting the job done of the Sharks could be made even more difficult with fullback Latrell Mitchell facing a three-match ban for elbowing Shaun Johnson.
