Montag struggled to close the gap of 32 seconds on the Ecuadorian team with just over six kilometres to go, despite the team being one loss of contact foul away from penalty.
After a heavy week of competing for Montag, the 26-year-old told Nine post-race she had struggled to find the motivation to power through in the build up to the race
"I'll be really honest, it was hard to come back up after that first medal," she said.
"I felt like I was self-satisfied already and I was thinking 'where am I going to go to find the motivation to get myself to go again six days later?'
"I had to tap into one of my values of teamwork and gratitude to (Rhydian). We've been training together for as long as I can remember.
"All the laps that we're hard, I just had to tell myself to do it for Rhyds.
"This might be his last Olympics and I wanted to send him home with a medal. To be able to do that is rewarding."

Cowley praised the success of his teammate in the final leg of the marathon event, labelling their victory as a dream come true.
"It's a good day to be an Australian," Cowley told Nine.
"If you had told me a few years ago i would be an Olympic medallist i wouldn't have believed you. It's just fantastic to be able to fulfil all the dreams that we've had together.
"It's just incredible."
