After its run in movie theatres, it will be streamed on Disney+ and ABC iVew and ABC Kids in Australia.
The Australian cartoon was first launched in 2018, gaining a worldwide fan base including celebrities such as Natalie Portman and Eva Mendes, and is now shown in 140 countries.
Brumm announced his involvement with the film in a heartfelt letter to viewers on the show’s website.
“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last,” Brumm wrote.
Sunrise reporter Georgie Costi was on the show on Wednesday, speaking about the exciting Bluey news of a feature film. Credit: Seven“This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series.
“In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such,” he said.
Brumm went on to explain it wasn’t “the end of the show” but rather an acknowledgement, that his “focus will be on the film” while production took place.
“Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words,” he added.
“To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six-year-old world and write authentically.”
On Wednesday, Sunrise reporter Georgie Costi was in Brisbane, where the silver screen adventures of the blue heeler and her family will be produced.
“That’s pretty much as good as it gets in the animation world getting to work with Disney,” Costi said.
“They say the film will have all the things we love about the TV show, all the nice messages all the cool characters. However, it’s not going to hit cinemas until 2027.
“That’s OK, because we know good things like this do take time. In the meantime, however, the creator of Bluey, Joe has actually written a letter to all the fans.
“He says that while his focus is going to be on the movie he’s going to take a step back of writing new episodes for what would have been season four.
“He says he doesn’t want to start doing that until he knows he can make the new season just as good as all the others. That’s OK. As you said earlier, we don’t mind watching the repeats. They’re on TV already.
“What’s interesting Bluey is in a whopping 140 countries.”
The new film will feature the voices of Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler.
The film will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith (Happy Feet, The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie), with the show’s season one to three director Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct the film.
