John Horgan, the 36th Premier of British Columbia passed away yesterday at the age 65 in Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital. Mr. Horgan led the provincial government from 2017 to 2022, at which time he stepped down due to a recurring incidence of cancer.
“I am very saddened by the passing of John Horgan,” said Councillor Trish Mandewo, UBCM president. “John’s door was always open to our board, and he cared deeply about the issues facing all of BC’s communities. He was an exemplary leader of our province, and he will be missed.”
During Mr. Horgan’s term as Premier, the Province introduced a housing plan that closely aligned with UBCM’s 2018 Housing Strategy. Local governments also remember the strong leadership provided by the Premier and his government through the pandemic. Mr. Horgan’s government also saw the implementation of a renewed Climate Action Program and the establishment of an MOU with UBCM to investigate BC’s system for local government finance.
