New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has run himself out for a duck following a mid-pitch collision with teammate Will Young on day two of the Wellington Test against Australia.

The Black Caps were 1-12 in the fifth over when Williamson fended a delivery from Australian quick Mitchell Starc towards mid-off, calling Young through for a quick single.

However, the Kiwi duo ran into each other in the middle of the pitch, with Williamson bumping into Starc and dropping his bat while Marnus Labuschagne threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Williamson, arguably New Zealand’s greatest Test cricketer, begrudgingly trudged off for a second-ball duck to put the Australians in a dominant position at the Basin Reserve.

“I cannot believe it,” former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian said in commentary.

“How has that happened?

“Calamity out there in the middle.”

Former New Zealand batter Craig McMillan continued: “I can’t believe what I’ve just seen here.

“That is just a disaster for New Zealand.”

The following over, the Black Caps were reeling at 3-12 when rising star Rachin Ravindra scooped a wide delivery from Josh Hazlewood towards point, where Nathan Lyon held onto a smart catch.

Williamson has been impeccable on home soil over the past 18 months, scoring six Test hundreds in New Zealand since the start of last year.

The 33-year-old’s previous Test scores in New Zealand were 133*, 43, 109, 118, 215, 121*, 1, 132 and 4, averaging 125.14 during that period.

Earlier on Friday, centurion Cameron Green and tailender Hazlewood combined for a record-breaking 116-run partnership for the tenth wicket, steering Australia towards 383 in the first innings.
