The martial-arts sequel stars Ben Wang as the next prodigy
In the Karate Kid: Legends trailer, two revered karate masters return to teach the next prodigy their craft. Ralph Macchio, who starred in the first three installments of The Karate Kid, and Jackie Chan, who played the maintenance man turned sensei in the The Karate Kid revival with Jaden Smith, star in the next chapter of the martial arts franchise.
Karate Kid: Legends, which released its trailer Tuesday, follows protege Li Fong, played by Ben Wang, who moves to New York with his mother after being uprooted from his Beijing home. On new turf, Li struggles to fit in with his classmates. As Li prepares for a martial arts showdown, he seeks help from Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and Chan’s Mr. Han, merging two distinct fighting styles.
Jonathan Entwistle, the director behind The End of the F***ing World directs Karate Kid: Legends. Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen also star in the Karate Kid sequel.
Karate Kid: Legends shares parallels with the Smith-led 2010 revival, which begins when Smith’s Dre moves with his mother (Taraji P. Henson) from Detroit to China. After some run-ins with the school bully, he meets Chan’s Mr. Han, who puts him through rigorous training in an effort to defeat the bullies in a kung fu match.
Trending StoriesIt also duplicates the premise of the first Karate Kid, released in 1984, for a new audience. The 1984 martial arts movie starred Pat Morita as the sage adviser Mr. Miyagi to Macchio’s Daniel, who must defend himself against California-based bullies. Macchio also stars in Netflix’s Cobra Kai, which comes to an end with its final sixth season episodes airing in February. Karate Kid: Legends arrives in theaters May 30.
