Karl Stefanovic is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to his attempts at humour.

And on Sunday, the Today show host, 48, came under fire for posting a picture of his daughter Harper on Instagram.

In the image, his daughter had a black line drawn across her brow as she looked up to the camera.

Fans were not given much context for the image apart from the caption which read: 'my daughter... Toula' followed by a love heart emoji.

Karl was making reference to Greek women in the post.

Karl's post was met well with some fans, with one writing 'still looks gorgeous' while another wrote 'mini Frida Kahlo', referring to the Mexican artist known for her distinctive unplucked eyebrows.

However some fans were not impressed, calling out the joke as 'childish'.

One fan wrote: 'how do you think all the Toulas out there would feel?'

'I understand it’s meant as a "joke" but in this day and age it's shameful. Grow up,' another added..

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Nine for comment.

It's not the first time the television host has caught flak for a poorly thought out joke, with the most recent example being his bizarre jab at rival breakfast host David Koch at Sunday's TV Week Logie Awards.

An ad-libbed joke about cocaine left the audience - and Koch himself - more bewildered than entertained.

It started when Koch confessed his fondness for the third season of Stan series Bump while presenting on stage.

Seizing the moment, Stefanovic took a comedic leap, playing on the double entendre of 'bump,' a term colloquially associated with cocaine.

'I did want to just check something... I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bump's... season three. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did.'

'Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning...' Stefanovic remarked, hoping for a laugh.

However, his risky attempt at humour seemed to miss the mark, with audience members not reacting the way he'd hoped.

A camera cut to a bewildered Kochie only added to the cringeworthy moment.

Host Sam Pang couldn't resist a jibe at Stefanovic's joke-bombing later in the show, saying: 'I don't want to say Karl's joke about Kochie sank, but OceanGate are offering expeditions to visit it.'
