Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron results, highlights: Cameron ...

21 May 2023
Katie Taylor

It took 12 long years, but Chantelle Cameron finally avenged a loss against Katie Taylor (from the amateur level). Cameron retained her status as the undisputed super lightweight champion, spoiling Taylor’s homecoming in Dublin, Ireland.

Cameron used her power to back Taylor down throughout the bout. The Brit kept it close to the vest and managed to walk past all of Taylor’s key shots. "Il Capo" was concerned about being screwed over by the judges, but she got the majority decision win (95-95, 96-94, 96-94) to hold onto her titles. The crowd inside the 3Arena were stunned, but still gave Taylor a standing ovation.

"I was petrified," Cameron said on the 95-95 scorecard and what it could have meant. "We’ve seen it before in boxing, and it happened to my team before… It was a close fight, Katie’s a great fighter, pound-for-pound best women’s boxer there is, and I turned up for the occasion. [Handling pressure is] my strength, that’s my forte.”

Throughout the contest, Cameron controlled the pace. She was actively throwing the better shots and feinting when she needed to. An overwhelming fighter, Cameron would bully Taylor at times.

Taylor looked good in round two, but as the fight wore on Cameron landed the better shots. Pressing forward, her jabs were her strong suit. Later in the fourth, an overhand shot rocked Taylor, and when she focused on Taylor's body, those shots bruised the ribs of the Irish fighter.

For her part, Taylor looked good in the later rounds, responding with combinations to the face. Round six was one that could have gone either way, but it wouldn't have helped with Cameron's bulldozer-like offense. Taylor landed several combinations that could have helped her if the fight had three-minute rounds or if the bout was 12 rounds instead of 10. However, Cameron's reach worked towards her advantage with long uppercuts.

The scrappy Taylor made it interesting towards the end, and the vocal crowd had her back. Still, it wasn’t enough for “The Bray Bomber” to secure the win.

Per CompuBox, Cameron landed 141 punches out of 565 shots (25%), while Taylor landed 111 of 284 (39.1%). Cameron landed 114 power shots compared to Taylor's 90 and landed double-digit shots in all but one round. Taylor landed single-digit shots in three.

Taylor, the undisputed lightweight champion, lost the first bout of her career. While the idea of a rematch with Amanda Serrano sometime this year, looking to recreate magic from their Fight of the Year inside Madison Square Garden in 2022, is on the table, Taylor liked the idea of a rematch with Cameron.

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn said the rematch should happen again in Dublin. Croke Park is still an option. However, Cameron later stated she is looking to move in weight. At the post-fight press conference, she teased fighting Taylor for lightweight gold.

“I'm kind of sick of putting my belts on the line. I'll go down to 135 pounds and take them belts off her hands," said Cameron via talkSPORT.
