Met Gala 2024: Everyone got fooled by a fake Katy Perry image

If you were paying any attention to the Met Gala today, you may have noticed that Katy Perry was deemed as winning the Met Gala fashion, looking absolutely divine in a glamorous floral gown — except there was just one problem. The image wasn't real.

While initially it seemed as though the 'Teenage Dream' singer blew fans away with her iconic look, after a little digging people took to X to express their dismay that we'd all been fooled by a doctored image. As it turns out, Katy Perry wasn't on the Met Gala stairs after all. And before you ask, no, don't worry, Jason Derulo hasn't fallen down them again either.

A few things are true here: Katy looks amazing. Her fake gown is to die for. She probably still won the 2024 Met fashion. Slay queen, etc. It's just unfortunate it's all very fake.

Expert weighs in on Katy Perry deepfake: 'Context is crucial'

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Dr TJ Thomson, Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication and Digital Media at RMIT University, said it's easy to mistake the image for a real one. Still, there are a couple of giveaways that it's been doctored when you zoom in.

"Context is crucial. When viewed quickly on a small screen while doomscrolling on social media, it’s easy to mistake the image as a real one. When you pause and zoom in, though, the internal logic of the image starts to unravel," TJ told us. "The people and gear in the background don’t look right. Faces and gear are distorted or proportions aren’t realistic. These are some giveaways of the current abilities of AI generation technologies.

"However, AI will get better and better at rendering details and doing so accurately over time. As such, it’s best not to just look at a single image but, instead, to “look laterally” across different data points to see if the image is what it appears to show. For example, search reputable sources online for images from this year’s Met Gala. Is the carpet the same as in the image in question? Did Katy Perry attend? What was she wearing? Using a reverse-image search can also help," TJ pointed out.
