LeBron James has more basketball behind him than he does in front of him. The Los Angeles Lakers star addressed his NBA future after he dropped a triple-double for the third straight game on Wednesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

“I’m not going to play that much longer, to be completely honest. I don’t know how many years that is. If it’s one year or two years, whatever the case may be,” James told reporters after the Lakers’ 128-123 win. “I said the other night, I’m not playing until the wheels fall off. I’m not going to be that guy. I’m not going to be the guy who is disrespecting the game because I just wanted to be out on the floor.”

James made history Wednesday when he broke his own record and became the oldest player (39) in NBA history to record three straight triple-doubles. He previously held the record when he became the oldest to do reach the same feat at 34 years old.

There is no denying the success James has had over the course of his 22-year career including four NBA titles, four MVP awards, 20 All-Star Game selections and is the league’s all-time leading scorer. James, who turns 40 next month, also played long enough to make history and play with his son, Bronny James, as the NBA’s first father-son duo.

While it’s unclear just when James will call it a career, ESPN’s Shams Charania said Thursday on “First Take” he has a “sense” 2025-26 will be the forward’s final season, noting James’ son, Bryce, could “keep him around an extra year or two.”

Bryce James is a senior in high school. James told Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor that it would “be pretty cool” to play alongside another son, but that it’s all about how his body reacts the next few years.
