Lions Defeat Rebels to Close Out Invitational
LOS ANGELES – The Lions swept the UNLVY Rebels, 3-0, Saturday night in the conclusion of the Lions/Trojans Invitational.
In the opening set, the Lions quickly took control, fueled by a powerful kill from Paige Flickinger that started a four-point run, giving them a 7-4 lead. After a 6-1 burst, UNLV called a timeout to regroup, but the Lions continued to dominate with a kill from Leah Burrell, assisted by Sam Hastings, extending the lead to 10-5. As the set neared its end, Delfina Schuh delivered a crucial service ace, bringing the Lions closer to victory. Although the Rebels fought back with a late 4-0 run, the Lions maintained their composure, and Olivia Toland's clutch kill sealed the set at 25-19.
Set two was tightly contested, with the score tying wice before the Lions edged ahead 10-8. The biggest lead in this set was only three points when Sophia Meyers service ace put LMU up 12-9. UNLV responded with a four-point streak to take their first lead of the match. In a thrilling finish, the Rebels led 25-24 after a five-point run, but the Lions rallied with three consecutive kills to clinch the set, 27-25.
The Rebels started off strong in set three, scoring eight consecutive points to lead 11-6. UNLV continued to build momentum, but the Lions answered with a five-point run of their own, taking a 17-16 lead. The teams traded points in a tense battle, but a service error by the Rebels followed by a clutch kill from Meyers sealed the set for LMU, 28-26, completing the 3-0 match win.
Flickinger and Meyers led all players with 12 kills each, while Hastings topped the match with 12 digs. Mia Schafer led both teams with 18 assists, and Jiana Lawson was dominant at the net with 5 blocks.
The Lions will face the Pacific Tigers in their conference home opener on Sept. 26 at 6 PM at Gersten Pavilion.
