Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness has been honoured with PFA Scotland’s Special Merit Award.

Widely regarded as one of the Reds’ greatest players, Souness made 359 appearances and won five league titles, three European Cups and four League Cups during a glorious six-and-a-half-year stay that ended in the summer of 1984.

Having captained the club in his final three seasons at Anfield, he returned as manager in April 1991 and won the FA Cup a year later. He rejoined Liverpool after a successful stint as player-manager of Rangers.

As a player, Souness won 54 caps for Scotland and also represented the likes of Middlesbrough and Sampdoria, while he went on to coach six more clubs, including Benfica and Newcastle United, after leaving Liverpool in January 1994.

He was presented with PFA Scotland’s Special Merit Award in recognition of his distinguished career at a ceremony on Sunday evening.
