CONTENTIOUS MOMENT AS LIVERPOOL HOLD ON
Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points thanks to Diogo Jota’s winner in a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace.
Arne Slot has now won nine of his first 10 games since succeeding Jurgen Klopp, but was frustrated that the visitors invited a late onslaught from the winless Eagles.
Victory came at a cost for Liverpool as goalkeeper Alisson Becker limped off in the closing stages ahead of a much more testing run of fixtures after the international break.
“We should have finished it off with such a dominant performance,” said Slot.
“If you score the second you break them mentally and now all the fans kept believing in a result because it was only 1-0, even though in my opinion we were the dominant team.” Defeat leaves Palace still in the bottom three with just three points from their opening seven games.

However, the Dutchman has been quick to point out that tougher tests lie ahead of his side’s Premier League title credentials.
Liverpool face Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City in their next six Premier League games.
“It’s very good we have won these games and now it is up to us to show ourselves in the big games,” added Slot.
“Unfortunately Ali will not be with us, I assume, if I saw the way he walked off the pitch correctly.”
There was a contentious moment late in the game, with referee Simon Hooper denying Palace a penalty in the 70th minute that could have tied up the game.
Liverpool captain van Dijk appeared to hold the arm of Marc Guehi as the Palace defender tried to get to a Trevoh Chalobah pass following a corner.
Despite the appeals of Palace players, Hooper opted against pointing to the spot and that call was backed up by the Premier League Match Centre account on X, which wrote: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by van Dijk on Guehi is checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play”.
However, even former Liverpool player Joe Cole conceded the Reds were lucky to get away with it.
“As Chalobah hits it into the ground that could quite easily have dropped to him. He has grabbed him by the arm and held him back,” Cole said on TNT Sports.
“Marc Guehi is not one to claim for something, but he really felt it was a penalty. That tells me it was a nailed-on penalty. I think they have got away with one there.”
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner said it was a “clear foul”.
“Absolutely I saw it after the game,” he said.
“I didn’t see it during the game and for me it was a clear foul. VAR had to intervene but they didn’t.”
‘UNBELIEVABLE’ SAKA FIRES ARSENAL TO VICTORY
Fresh from a dominant win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Arsenal were expected to sweep aside winless Southampton.
But the Saints shocked the Emirates 10 minutes into the second half when Cameron Archer fired in his first Premier League goal since a summer move from Aston Villa.
The lead only lasted three minutes before Kai Havertz scored for the seventh consecutive home game.
Gabriel Martinelli was introduced after an hour and took just eight minutes to make his mark with a finish on the volley from Bukayo Saka’s cross.
Having set up Arsenal’s first two goals, Saka pounced on a loose ball to score the third himself.

“If you want to be at the top, sometimes players have to create those moments and he’s certainly done that today.
“I think it’s another step ahead, and it’s what he wants.
“Do it at home, do it away, do it in big games, in the not-so-big games, and when the team needs it, not when it’s 3-0. That is what defines a top, top player.
“What he’s doing at his age is unbelievable. We have many examples of that as well.”
CITY CLAIM NERVY WIN
Mateo Kovacic scored twice as Manchester City clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Fulham on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a first half shock when Andreas Pereira put Fulham ahead at the Etihad Stadium.
But Kovacic, filling in for the injured Rodri, struck either side of half-time to settle City’s nerves.
The Croatian midfielder’s brace was followed by Jeremy Doku’s blistering strike before Rodrigo Muniz netted Fulham’s second to set up a tense finish.
City remain unbeaten in their first 10 games in all competitions this season, with five wins from seven league matches putting them firmly in contention for a fifth successive title.
They sit in second place, one point behind leaders Liverpool after ending a two-match winless run in the top-flight.
Questions have been asked over how City will cope without the influential Rodri after the Spain international was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
But while Guardiola may have been concerned at how Fulham were able to take control for spells, in Kovacic they have an able deputy.

Haaland also had a free-kick blocked and then headed at Bernardo Leno before City were caught napping on Fulham’s first attack as Adama Traore broke away from Rico Lewis.
The Spaniard should have punished City but was denied by the feet of Ederson. City switched off again in 26th minute and this time were made to pay. They failed to deal with a deep cross from Antonee Robinson and the ball was worked inside to Raul Jimenez, whose clever backheel flick dropped perfectly for Pereira to volley home.
Fulham should have increased their lead moments later as Alex Iwobi teed up Traore but again the former Wolves man erred, scooping over the bar as Ederson closed in.
The Cottagers were to rue their misses as City began their fightback when Kovacic levelled just after the half-hour mark.
Kovacic drove in from the edge of the box, via a deflection off Joachim Anderson, after a corner fell to him invitingly.
The former Chelsea star put City ahead with an assured finish two minutes after the break.
Silva created the chance with a nice lay-off and Kovacic did the rest, beating Sander Berge with a nice touch and curling in a shot from 18 yards.
Doku bagged the vital third goal in the 82nd minute as he cut inside from the left and rattled a shot into the top corner.
Fulham made City work until the end as Muniz turned to score with a deflected shot two minutes from full-time.
