Liverpool vs Bournemouth

ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — It might seem over the top to describe the second game of any club's season as a must-win, but that is arguably the position Liverpool find themselves in.

Jurgen Klopp's side started the last campaign with back-to-back draws in the Premier League, and did little more than disappoint from there.

And so, after playing out a stalemate with Chelsea on the opening day this time around, they will be desperate to get three points on the board in their first home outing.

Standing in their way is a Bournemouth side who also drew their opener, and who will be out to make a statement that they deserve to be feared under new coach Andoni Iraola.

The Sporting News is following the match live from Anfield and providing commentary and highlights below.

Anfield looking utterly resplendent this afternoon, just a shame that stand isn’t quite finished yet. Going to be some noise in here when it is. pic.twitter.com/vbJMPz5Mnz

Liverpool vs Bournemouth live updates, highlights, and commentary HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL TAKE A 2-1 LEAD INTO THE BREAK

45th min: Alexander-Arnold is the beneficiary of a Szoboszlai dummy and cuts in on his left before stinging Neto's palms with a shot.

43rd min: Zabarnyi is put under pressure by an Alexander-Arnold ball in behind but does well to shield it from Diaz and win the foul. This game just starting to settle down a little now after a period of heavy Liverpool pressure.

36th min: SALAH PUTS LIVERPOOL IN FRONT!

The Egyptian's powerful attempt down the middle is well saved by Neto but, unfortunately for the Bournemouth man, the ball sits up nicely for a follow-up that ends up in the back of the net.

35th min: PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!

Dominik Szoboszlai is upended just inside the box by Joe Rothwell and, after a second to deliberate, the referee points at the spot. Not one you'll see overturned.

28th min: DIAZ LEVELS IT UP FOR LIVERPOOL!

The hosts are rewarded for their improvement over the last 10 minutes as they get the goal to square it up.

It's brilliantly taken by Diaz, who chips the ball up from a low Jota pass and acrobatically volleys it past Neto from just outside the six-yard box.

24th min: Liverpool now starting to play football and asking some questions of that Bournemouth backline.

A nice exchange between Salah and Jota forces Neto into pushing the ball away and he is rather fortunate it bounces back into his hands.

15th min: Better from Liverpool as Jota nips in to pinch the ball and feeds Gakpo for a trademark drive forward through the middle.

Semenyo has little choice but to bring him down and goes in the book.

9th min: Alisson Becker goes in the book for cynically hacking down Anthony after losing the ball outside his own box.

What are Liverpool playing at?!

5th min: Liverpool hit the bar! Van Dijk rises highest to get his head on a corner but is denied by the woodwork. We're being treated to an entertaining start here.

3rd min: BOURNEMOUTH TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH SEMENYO!

It's another defensive shambles from Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold failing to trap a Van Dijk pass before Bournemouth pounce and Semenyo smashes home emphatically. A great finish.

1st min: Jaidon Anthony has the ball in the net for Bournemouth but it's not going to count.

Liverpool are so, so lucky the winger had strayed just offside before capitalising on a Trent Alexander-Arnold miscontrol that took Alisson out of the game completely and left him with an open net to tap into.

KICK-OFF: UNDER WAY AT ANFIELD!

10 mins to KO: Jurgen Klopp has suggested that he is ready to throw Wataru Endo on for a Liverpool debut this afternoon.

“We had a little meeting this morning where I showed him a little bit how we want to play and these kinds of things," he told Sky Sports.

“Now let’s see if we bring him on or not – but that he’s with us is really good news."

30 mins to KO: The players are out for their warm-ups at Anfield and they receive a great reception from a not-quite-full Anfield.

That unfinished top tier of the Anfield Road end looms over the stadium, and Liverpool will hope they don't miss the extra push of those additional 10,000 fans today.

1 hour to KO: LIVERPOOL UNCHANGED.

1.5 hours to KO: Liverpool made their third signing of the summer just 24 hours ago, completing a move to bring in midfielder Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. But will the Japan international be available to feature? That all depends on whether he secured a work permit in time and we do not yet know if that was case.

2 hours to KO: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Liverpool vs Bournemouth from Anfield. The Reds are out to build on a point in their opening fixture at Chelsea, while Bournemouth have a chance to show what they're all about under Andoni Iraola at one of English football's toughest grounds to visit.
