It was a hotly contested final with multiple riders reeling off 90-plus point runs on the back of some massive air and jaw-dropping stunts.

Martin, looking to defend his Olympic title, got off to a poor start with his foot slipping on landing his first trick but recovered well including whipping out a competition-first bike flip which had the audience in awe.

He was looking good for a strong score only to crash on his final obstacle with just six seconds remaining to turn in a 64.4 more than 30 points back on the gold medal score.

It put all the pressure on his final run to try and pull something out of the bag to salvage his medal hopes needing to better a 94.82 to give him a chance at gold.

He started off to a flyer, with a quadruple tail whip and a double flair impressing onlookers.

But he scrubbed off too much speed on the landing which saw him fail to clear the next obstacle cleanly causing his foot to touch the ground and end his hopes.

Martin remained upbeat despite the disappointment, saying “it just wasn’t meant to be.”
