Man City 1-1 Everton Stats: City Drop More Points Following ...
Erling Haaland’s second-half penalty miss meant that Manchester City’s poor run of form continued on Boxing Day. Look back at the action with the best facts and Opta data in our Man City vs Everton stats page.
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City lost yet more ground at the top of the table with another two points dropped, this time at home to lowly Everton. It could have been very different had Erling Haaland not seen a second-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford, however.
Despite taking the lead at the Etihad Stadium in this Boxing Day clash, Pep Guardiola’s side were once again unable to take all three points, meaning that they have won less than half (8/18) their league matches in 2024-25 so far.
Bernardo Silva put City into a 14th-minute lead, as he slid to make contact with the ball before a deflection off Jarrad Branthwaite helped it spin past a diving Pickford and into the back of the net. It was the Portuguese midfielder’s fourth Premier League goal against the Toffees, only ever scoring more against Watford in the competition (5).
Silva could have put City 2-0 up in the 33rd minute, but blasted wide with the outside of his boot when well placed to test Pickford in the Everton goal. Guardiola’s team were made to pay three minutes later, as Everton equalised against the run of play.
It was Iliman Ndiaye who made it 1-1, after he expertly guided a bouncing ball into the top corner of the City net from inside the box. It was Ndiaye’s third goal in the Premier League this season, netting for the first time since 19 October 2024 against Ipswich.
City came out for the second half looking to get an early goal to regain the lead, and it only took them five minutes to get a fantastic opportunity to do just that. Savinho wriggled his way into the box before being taken down by Vitalii Mykolenko. Haaland was given the chance to end a three-game scoreless run from the penalty spot, but saw his spot-kick saved by Pickford before being ruled offside upon scoring the rebound.
There were few chances for either side after that disallowed goal, with City continuing to struggle to break down opposition defences. Everton offered little in the second half, with just four shots after half-time, but a point away at City certainly isn’t a poor result and will undoubtedly be celebrated by Sean Dyche’s side.
