ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Dejan Kulusevski snatched a last-gasp 3-3 draw for Tottenham as champions Manchester City again let a late lead slip in Sunday's Premier League clash.
Substitute Jack Grealish thought he'd given City three points when he converted Erling Haaland's low cross in the 81st minute but both men were involved in an angry stoppage-time flashpoint with the officials after Kulusevski brilliantly headed home via the underside of the crossbar from Brennan Johnson's left-wing delivery.
Son Heung-min scored a goal at either end to set the tone for a crazy contest. Pep Guardiola's men made all the running early on but from their third corner of the game in the sixth minute, Spurs broke rapidly and Son caught Jeremy Doku napping to fire past Ederson.
It was Son's eighth goal in a fixture he loves but those affections were tempered shortly afterwards when he turned Haaland's flick on from Julian Alvarez's right-wing free-kick beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

Haaland then should have put City ahead but dragged wide with the goal at his mercy after Alvarez and Bernardo Silva disturbed Spurs' latest haphazard attempt to play out from the back.
Doku and Alvarez each hit the post either side of the latter teeing up Phil Foden for his seventh goal of the season.
City were made to rue missed chance as the defensive vulnerabilities of recent weeks again reared their head and Giovani Lo Celso made it back-to-back goals with a fine 69th-minute finish from the edge of the box.
By the time Grealish and Kulusevski traded goals, City had conceded six leads over the course of their draws with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, a run that has seen them drop to third in the table — three points behind leaders Arsenal and one shy of Jurgen Klopp's men in second.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 2023 Haaland furious as referee Hooper denies City late chanceRodri ensured City emerged from a Spurs attack in injury time with a chance to break. Haaland received the ball near the centre circle with three Tottenham players around him. Emerson Royal fouled the big Norwegian, but the striker recovered and lifted a glorious ball over the top for Grealish. Surely the England international was about to bring the house down with the winner?
Not so, as referee Simon Hooper brought play back for a foul on Haaland. A free-kick 60 yards from goal is not quite a slam-dunk situation to compare to a £100 million footballer being clean through, so what was going on? The reason for the stoppage initially appeared to be the official on the far side deciding Grealish was offside, which, to the naked eye, looked a bold and incorrect call. Hooper also quite clearly indicated the advantage was being played before bringing play back for a free-kick after watching Haaland send the long ball to Grealish.
These are the days of long-delayed offside flags. Destiny Udogie romped about before eventually being penalised at the end of one second-half Spurs attack. And, studying the replay of the injury time incident shows the official did not flag and that Grealish was onside. So City were right, in that moment, to feel aggrieved. But if Haaland had shown his usual poise in front of goal, and if their defence was not so woefully susceptible to straight long balls or able to hold onto a lead inside the final 10 minutes of matches, then it wouldn't have been an issue at all.
Rodri and Grealish banned for Aston Villa matchRodri's 34th-minute booking for crudely bringing down Pedro Porro was his fifth of the season and means he will miss City's trip to face high-flying Aston Villa on Wednesday. It will be the Champions League matchwinner's second suspension this season and, from Guardiola's point of view, the omens are fairly rotten.
The Spain midfielder was sent off following an altercation with Morgan Gibbs-White during City's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in September and they lost all three of the games he missed. For context, one of those was a Carabao Cup tie at Newcastle United for which he would almost certainly have been rested in any case, but City's midfield malfunctioned badly during back-to-back away defeats to Wolves and Arsenal.
Mateo Kovacic, in particular, struggled in those games. The Croatia international has just returned to fitness, Matheus Nunes remains sidelined and Kalvin Phillips continues not to be trusted by his manager. Defenders John Stones and Rico Lewis are comfortable moving into midfield positions, so maybe one or both of them will play. Either way, it's a challenging tactical puzzle Guardiola could have done without during the period of dwindling form.
Grealish will also miss the match against his old club after getting his fifth booking of the season for kicking the ball away following a foul.
Son sets unwanted record with a piece of Man City vs Spurs historyIt looked for all the world that it was going to be another dazzling day at the Etihad Stadium office for Son. At the same end of the ground where his fabulous early double turned the 2019 Champions League quarterfinal on its head, he caught the European champions cold once more. But then came the careless touch from a swinging leg — very much the sort of thing that can happen when a forward with all of the enthusiasm but little of the capacity for defending finds themselves under the spotlight.
There were 137 seconds between Son's goal and his own goal, outstripping a Premier League record set by Jonny Evans for Manchester United against Newcastle in December 2012 by half a minute. The only other player to score at both ends during the opening 10 minutes of a Premier League game is former City midfielder Gareth Barry, who did so for Aston Villa in 1999.
He won't appreciate it now (perhaps he never will!) but Son has carved out a little piece of City vs Spurs folklore for himself. When the two sides met in the 1981 FA Cup final, Tommy Hutchison gave City the lead before heading Glenn Hoddle's free-kick into his own net. Spurs won the replay thanks to Ricky Villa's solo goal. If you squint hard enough, there's now a throughline from that historic Spurs triumph to modern-day hero Son.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 2023 Man City vs Tottenham live updates, highlights, and commentaryFulltime: Grealish, who looked like he was going to be the hero, has a cross blocked. The home crowd boo the officials. Haaland is still fuming. Lo Celso barges into him as he marches off the pitch and Guardiola and Postecoglou — immediately post-cuddle — prevent things from getting out of hand. That was a preposterous call at the end from Simon Hooper and his officials, but there's no guarantee Grealish would have scored and, frankly, City only have themselves to blame.
Over the course of the consecutive draws against an erratic Chelsea, title rivals Liverpool and an injury-hit Tottenham, they have conceded leads on an astonishing six occasions. Spurs lived a charmed life during the first half but as City's tank appeared to empty, they grasped opportunities through Lo Celso and Kulusevski. Thanks for joining us on this fairly unhinged day of Premier League action.
90th minute+6: City corner. One last chance. Played short. Lewis and SIlva make a mess of it. Ball into the box, half-hearted claims for handball. Another ball in, Akanji goes down under a little bit of contact from Skipp but he wasn't going to get the ball, you can't give that. A quick VAR check is done.
90th minute+4: Spurs attack down the right, Kulusevski's cross is another good one. Rodri comes away with it. Haaland holds off three men and plays a doozy of a ball over the top for Grealish. The referee brings play back, for a foul on Haaland thinking Grealish was offside. The thing is, it looks like he wasn't. City are furious. Haaland talks (or, more accurately, yells) himself into a booking. It's all going off.
90th minute+3: It's a low, devilish delivery that scoots past everyone.
90th minute+2: Kulusevski fouls Grealish. Silva over the free-kick.
90th minute+1: Five minutes added on. Who'd bet against a winner?
90th minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Dejan Kulusevski!!!!!!
WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT, IT'S HAPPENED AGAIN!!! Johnson gets down the City right, it's a superb cross and Kulusevski matches it was a brilliant header that goes in off the bar.

— NBC Sports Soccer (@NBCSportsSoccer) December 3, 2023 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 202388th minute: Lewis sets Silva on his way down the right channel. It's been a wonderful little cameo from the England youngster. Silva's cross with his weaker right foot has too much on it for Haaland.
86th minute: Fabulous challenge from Lewis on Kulusevski. And Spurs don't get the corner, which looks like a boo-boo from the officials. Tottenham certainly feel that way. Ake and Kovacic replace Gvardiol and Alvarez, while Richarlison comes off for Bissouma to chase the equaliser for the visitors.
84th minute: The set piece is wasted. Mateo Kovacic looks like he's getting ready to come on.
83rd minute: Now then, City have held onto leads about as well as a dog walker after a day on the mulled wine at the Christmas markets recently. What have they got here? Gvardiol clatters into Skipp to concede a free-kick on the Spurs right and earns a booking. That should calm everybody down.
81st minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Jack Grealish!!!!!!
He won't be available in midweek but Grealish might just have stolen the points. Rodri snaps in to win possession high up in a game that has basically been made up of people winning possession high up over and over. Haaland looks up and cuts across goal for his great mate to slot home.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 202379th minute: Hojbjerg fouls Grealish. They exchange observations. Maybe addresses for Christmas cards.
75th minute: Lewis right into the action, little give and go with Rodri, who digs out a finish from the return pass but can't keep it down.
73rd minute: Foden the man to make way. You'd imagine that means Bernardo Silva out to the right to make City more effective in possession, but it doesn't exactly increase their goal threat.
72nd minute: City survive the next corner but they look like they're running on empty. Rico Lewis is coming on.
71st minute: Rodri scrambles behind and Spurs have a corner. City rocking here. The ball breaks to Lo Celso... deflection off Grealish and into the side netting. That was travelling.
69th minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Giovani Lo Celso!!!!!!
It has been coming! Alvarez tries to pop a pass to Haaland on halfway. Davies gets there first, the ball loops forward to Son and just like that Tottenham are in a very good attacking position. He lays it off to Lo Celso, who cuts inside to curl a wonderful shot beyond Ederson and in via the inside of the left post from just outside the box.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 202367th minute: Gvardiol stands up well to Kulusevski. Grealish and Alvarez then help out but Spurs win a corner on the right. Ederson completes a routine catch.
63rd minute: Udogie scampers into the City box. Surely he's offside? Ederson saves, Dias hoofs clear. The flag goes up. Everyone laughs/swears profusely at the linesman.
61st minute: City haven't been able to dictate terms over the past five minutes or so. The Spurs fans have found their voice and Grealish is booked for kicking the ball away. That's daft because it means he's also suspended alongside Rodri for the Villa game.
60th minute: A nice, calm and inquisitive period of Spurs possession ends with Walker fouling Johnson.
56th minute: Spurs break from the set piece and this time Son puts the frighteners on Grealish. Johnson's shot is deflected and the opportunity passes.
55th minute: Grealish wins a free-kick. Expect more of that.
54th minute: Nice first involvement for Grealish, who cuts in and aims a cross towards Haaland at the back post. It's just too high for the City No. 9 to head it down.
53rd minute: Nicely hit strike from Johnson but Ederson watches it all the way and gathers.
52nd minute: Jack Grealish is on for Jeremy Doku, probably with a flea in his ear from Guardiola with regards to keeping hold of the ball.
50th minute: Hojbjerg launches himself into a meaty challenge on Haaland after Alvarez got his fellow forward moving. City free-kick and potentially more Scandi-on-Scandi violence to come.
46th minute: We're back. Hojbjerg is on for Gill which suggests a change in shape for Spurs. Still they continue to give the ball to City in dangerous areas. Alvarez and Haaland set up Silva for a sumptuous strike with the outside of his foot. Vicario is equal to it.
Halftime: Both teams seemed to run out of steam a little bit during the final 10 minutes of that half. It was chaos before that as Son Heung-min scored at both ends before Phil Foden put City ahead. The other big news from a City point of view is Rodri's booking means he will miss Wednesday's trip to Aston Villa.
45th minute: Even by his own standards, Ederson plays a particularly pulseless pass from inside his own six-yard box. Walker has seen enough and maims a clearance into the icy Manchester sky. There will be three additional minutes.
42nd minute: Kulusevski now looking for Gill and Walker mops up again. The England man is certainly getting through the work against his former club.
41st minute: Spurs play this beautifully through midfield. Son finds Gill, who has the door closed on him by Walker in a very "stead on, young man" kind of way.
39th minute: Dias scampers back to thwart Son. He's really warming to this duel. His central defensive partner Akanji then punts out of the goalmouth. Although not to the same extent as Spurs, a lot of City's defensive work is very reactive here.
38th minute: Udogie is the first Spurs man to be shown a yellow card. You sense he won't be the last as last-ditch appears to be their default setting at the moment.
36th minute: Haaland blooters one over! Blimey, if he finds his shooting boots this could get medieval.
35th minute: Alvarez hits the post! The Argentina forward is all over this Spurs defence like a horrible rash. He fizzes a low shot that swerves away from Vicario and hits the face of the base of the left-hand post.
34th minute: Rodri into the book for a foul on Porro. That rules him out of Wednesday's trip to Aston Villa. When he was suspended for three games earlier this season, City lost all of them.
32nd minute: Davies with a last-gasp clearance over the Spurs crossbar. They're hanging on a bit all of a sudden.
31st minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Phil Foden!!!!
Spurs can't clear their lines, Haaland spins a pass out to Doku. The winger pops the ball into Alvarez at the near post, who shows unselfishness and presence of mind to set up Foden for a nimble close-range finish.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) December 3, 202329th minute: Doku rattles the crossbar!!! Foden emerges from a frankly rubbish period of City buildup with the ball. Not entirely sure how. Anyway, he finds Doku, who coolly glides into the Spurs box and plants a shot beyond Vicario. It cannons down off the angle of post and bar.
28th minute: A dreadfully misplaced pass from Bernardo Silva in his own half. Gill steals in, fires into the City box and Rodri clears behind. Son is furious the ball didn't end up with him and Silva is all apologies. The corner is cleared. This game is a mess.
26th minute: Spurs will continue trying to play out from the back but Alvarez and Silva are yapping around like under-fed terriers and the whole thing doesn't feel particularly sustainable.
23rd minute: Alvarez is dozily dispossessed in midfield. Guardiola is as impressed as you might expect. Now Johnson scoots around the outside of Gvardiol as if he isn't there. It requires a superb last-ditch clearance from Dias with Son lurking. There are definitely more goals in this for Spurs, albeit not from the resulting corner.
21th minute: A Tottenham corner. What a delightful change of pace. Porro works it short and finds a lovely angle to cross. Dias half clears and Spurs win another over on the other side,
18th minute: Porro does a very good piece of defending by standing Doku up and nicking the ball. He proceeds to pass it straight out of play, which feels somewhat counter-productive.
17th minute: A couple more City corners. They work the latest one short but no dice once more.
15th minute: Lo Celso gets a clout from Silva following his earlier nonsense. The City midfielder's reasoning that he won't get booked because his opponent didn't earlier turns out to be sound.
13th minute: Erling Haaland, what have you done??? Vicario plays Emerson into trouble and Alvarez steals the ball deep inside the Spurs third. Silva squares to Haaland. The crowd are half up celebrating already but the Premier League Golden Boot winner drags wide.
12th minute: Foden with room to cut inside. His shot is blocked and Vicario is alert to smother Silva's flick from the rebound.
9th minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Son Heung-min (OG)!!!
I know he likes goals in this fixture but that's taking it to extremes. Lo Celso crudely fouls Silva, Alvarez whips in a more effective delivery from the right flank, Haaland flicks on and Son turns into his own net. Wild stuff.

5th minute: Foden has an inquisitive look at Udogie but the Italian coolly deals with the danger.
4th minute: Gvardiol with a long throw to Haaland, who wins a second left-wing corner. Get it launched! Spurs clear the danger.
3rd minute: Walker, Foden and Bernardo bait the Spurs press before play is switched to Doku. The Belgium winger wins the first corner of the afternoon. Akanji attacks Alvarez's cross at the near post, gets there before Vicario but can't make clean contact.
1st minute: Silva gets us underway. Looks like the Portugal international in central midfield and Foden on the right wing for starters for City.
1 min prior to kickoff: City in their team huddle as Blue Moon rings around the stadium. Spurs do likewise, but right over by the away fans, who give them a rapturous reception.
3 mins prior to kickoff: Here come the teams. City enter the field having slipped down to third in the table after Liverpool's dramatic 4-3 win over Fulham at Anfield. Victory would move Pep Guardiola's side back up to second and within a point of leaders Arsenal ahead of a tough trip to Aston Villa in midweek.
20 mins prior to kickoff: This is a fixture that City have greeted with a degree of trepidation over recent seasons. Guardiola has lost seven of his 17 meetings with Spurs as City manager, including three of the past four. The only success during that period came in January, when City were forced to battle back from 2-0 down at halftime for a 4-2 win. It’s worth remembering that these most recent struggles came against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, while old foe Jose Mourinho dished out back-to-back 2-0 defeats at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium — where City have played five, lost five and scored none — in 2020.
Postecoglou’s Spurs will obviously present a very different proposition on the field to the puzzles posed by Conte and Mourinho but, as Chelsea, Liverpool and RB Leipzig have shown over recent weeks, going for City with their current form and personnel isn’t the terrible idea it felt like during the treble run-in last term.
40 mins prior to kickoff: Postecoglou has, perhaps typically, opted against the extra midfield ballast that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg brings to the party and named a four-pronged attack. Bryan Gill. Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson will support Son Heung-min in attack. The Korean star is now indisputably Tottenham’s main man in these post-Harry Kane days and has seven goals from previous encounters with City. Three of those came across the two legs of the 2019 Champions League quarterfinal that Spurs won dramatically on away goals.
55 mins prior to kickoff: One change to the Spurs side that lost at Aston Villa, with Yves Bissouma back from suspension to replace the injured Rodrigo Bentancur.

1 hr 20 mins prior to kickoff: Of course, undersoil heating and other modern facilities mean the playing area will be pristine today (hang on, as I type it appears to have started snowing...) — something of a relief for Ange Postecoglou. Not only does the Spurs manager love to play expansive, easy-on-the-eye football, but he can scarcely afford any more injuries to key players. After occupying top spot during the opening weeks of the Premier League season, Spurs have dropped to sixth on the back of three consecutive defeats.
This slump has coincided with injuries to James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Pape Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur, while defender Cristian Romero will serve the final game of a three-match ban today. In terms of the spectacle, especially in light of City drawing their past two games, it’s a shame Spurs are not at full tilt. But, irrespective of who’s in the XI that will be confirmed 20 minutes from now, Postecoglou has shown he and his players will not die wondering.
1 hr 40 mins prior to kickoff: Temperatures have settled a balmy 2 degrees Celsius in Manchester, although those are set to dip as the sun sets before kickoff. Large sections of the Ashton Canal remained frozen on the walk up to the Etihad Stadium from Manchester this lunchtime. These are weather conditions that call to mind one of the most famous editions of this fixture, when the BBC’s Match of the Day cameras captured City’s 4-1 win over Spurs in 1967 on a Maine Road pitch under a blanket of snow.
The fact that Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison’s team went on to win the Division One title in 1967/68 has only added to the legend of the so-called “Ballet on Ice”. It’s therefore somewhat fitting that City are facing Tottenham at home with temperatures close to zero on the week that a statue paying tribute to Francis Lee, Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and their great side of the late 1960s and early 1970s was unveiled outside the stadium.
