A youthful Manchester United side were beaten 3-1 by Wrexham in San Diego as their pre-season preparations suffered a setback.

With the first team set to take on Real Madrid in the early hours of Thursday, United manager Erik ten Hag opted for an experimental line-up that included veteran defender Jonny Evans.

But the Red Devils struggled to get a grip on the game, and after an early injury to star striker Paul Mullin, Wrexham took control and went two goals in front through Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden.

Marc Jurado pulled a goal back for United on the stroke of half-time, but Wrexham restored their two-goal lead thanks to substitute Sam Dalby after United captain Dan Gore had been shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge.

Mail Sport's Chris Wheeler was on hand to rate the United players.

Wrexham players celebrate after beating Manchester United 3-1 in San Diego

NATHAN BISHOP 4 – Flattened Paul Mullin with a sickening challenge and was lucky to stay on the pitch. Loudly booed after that and replaced at half-time. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson later revealed Mullin had suffered a punctured lung.

MARC JURADO 6.5 – Lost track of Elliot Lee for Wrexham’s first goal but recovered well and pulled a goal back with a smart volley in injury-time at the end of the first half.

WILL FISH 6 – Outjumped by Hayden for the second goal and struggled under Ben Tozer’s long throws at times, but otherwise looked solid enough.

JONNY EVANS 5.5 – Looked a little ponderous at the age of 37, not least when Mullin left him trailing in the incident that led to the Wrexham striker being badly injured.

Jonny Evans (left) failed to impress as Wrexham scored three goals and regularly looked dangerous going forward

ALVARO FERNANDEZ 6.5 – Has looked very promising in pre-season and provided the cross from the left for Jurado to score United’s goal.

DAN GORE 6 – Captained the team despite veteran Evans being in the line-up, and perhaps a little unfortunate to be sent off early in the second half for a foul on substitute Andy Cannon when both players seemed to miss the ball. Was the referee levelling up for not sending off Bishop?

United captain Dan Gore (pictured) was shown a red card, but replays suggested the referee's decision was harsh

ISAK HANSEN-AAROEN 6.5 – Industrious display from the Norwegian who put in a good shift before he was replaced on the hour mark.

SHOLA SHORETIRE 6 – His career seems to have slipped a little since making his debut at the age 17. But he certainly has great potential and showed flashes of it here.

HANNIBAL MEJBRI 7 – United’s main creative spark, he kept Wrexham on their toes and was never far from the heat of the battle as usual.

Hannibal Mejbri was United's main creative outlet, but could not inspire his side to victory

TOBY COLLYER 6 – Caused Wrexham some problems down the left flank before making way for Sonny Aljofree on the hour mark.

JOE HUGILL 6 – Didn’t have many chances to threaten before he was replaced by Charlie McNeil 20 minutes from the end.

Subs: Harrison, Mee, Vitek (for Bishop 46, 6), Aljofree (for Collyer 60, 6.5), Kambwala (for Evans 74, 6), Pye, Oyedele (for Hansen-Aaroen 60, 6), McNeil (for Hugill 68, 6.5), Mejia (for Shoretire 68, 6).

Scorer: Jurado 45+5

Booked: Bishop, Fernandez

Marc Jurado (pictured) scored United's only goal with a tidy finish from close range
