IF, LIKE US, YOU’VE WATCHED the official trailer for the Barbie movie a hundred times, the opening sequence is likely etched into your brain. In case you haven’t, let us set the scene: Two high-heel-clad feet walk across the screen, before slipping off the bright-pink shoes. The feet remain arched — Barbie has arrived!

The scene was instantly iconic, playing on one of the iconic doll’s signature features. Now, the woman behind the moment, Margot Robbie — yes, Robbie did do her own stunts — has shared precisely how the Barbie team executed the sequence.

During an appearance on Ten’s The Project, Robbie revealed that very little actually went into the scene. She didn’t even have to practice her balancing skills!

“There’s no special effects, you’d be amazed how few [special effects] there are in this film actually,” she said. “We didn‘t do that many takes of it, a couple of takes and I kind of held on to a bar so I was sturdy when I stepped.”

“We just put double-sided tape on the floor so that my shoes stayed still and I did have a pedicure that morning.”

Director Greta Gerwig also revealed that there had been discussions about using CGI feet in the film, but said, “I thought ‘Oh, god, terrifying, a nightmare.’”

The film is still weeks away from hitting theatres, but the hype is very real, with fans (us included) planning Barbie-themed bashes and premiere parties.

Barbie fans will be happy to know that there could potentially be a sequel to Gerwig’s project.

During a new Time cover story, Robbie admitted, “I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”

However, she has been involved in conversations about the future of the Barbie cinematic universe, saying, “It could go a million different directions from this point.”
