Philippines Says Indonesia Did Not Seek Reciprocity for Mary Jane ...
November 22, 2024 | 03:35 pm
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) clarified that Indonesia did not request any form of reciprocity in exchange for the repatriation of Mary Jane Veloso. However, the Philippines remains grateful for Indonesia's gesture.
During a press conference at the Palace on Friday, November 22, 2024, as reported by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), DFA Vice Minister Eduardo De Vega said that the Philippines and Indonesia will finalize the details of Veloso's transfer.
“They did not ask for anything, no prisoner exchange, nothing. They have always been kind to us, most recently helping us in the case of Alice Guo,” De Vega said.
De Vega emphasized that Veloso's repatriation signifies the strengthening of the bilateral relationship between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.
“This is a positive sign for the future of Philippine-Indonesian relations under the leadership of new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and his friendship with President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.,” he added.
“They did not ask for anything. But of course, the Philippines will always remember Indonesia's kindness and generosity,” he further explained.
Marcos and Prabowo have met twice this year, first during Prabowo's state visit to Manila and subsequently when Marcos attended Prabowo's inauguration ceremony in Indonesia.
Mary Jane Veloso was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to death the same year after authorities discovered 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage. She received a last-minute reprieve in April 2015 when Manila informed Jakarta that her recruiter had surrendered to authorities.
For a decade, the Philippine government has tirelessly worked to appeal her case.
