Matildas vs USA

The Matildas face a tough assignment in their final group stage match of the 2024 Olympics, as they face a resurgent USA side.

USA are on six points with two wins so far, having easily defeated Germany 4-1 on matchday two, whilst Australia have had a much tougher journey, losing 3-0 to Germany and having to comeback from 5-2 down to defeat Zambia 6-5.

Destiny is in their hands, but history is not on their side when it comes to taking on the Americans.

The Sporting News looks back at the history between the Matildas and USA in women's football.

Matildas vs USA history, head-to-head record

How much is history not on the Matildas side? Well, they have only won once in 33 meetings with the United States dating back to 1987.

That one win came back in 2017 at the Tournament of Nations, where a goal from Tameka Yallop - then playing under her maiden name Tameka Butt - was enough to secure a 1-0 win for the Matildas, who were then coached by Alen Stajcic.

That is the only bright spot for Australia, with the USA winning 27 times and scoring 103 goals in meetings against Australia, conceding just 31.

Australia have also only managed to hold the USA to a draw five times.

Matildas vs USA last meeting

The last meeting between the teams in all competitions came in back-to-back friendlies in 2021, when the USA travelled down under.

They comfortably won the first fixture in Sydney 3-0 in front of what was then a record crowd for a women's football match in Australia, though the Matildas fought back in the second game to secure a 1-1 draw.

They had met earlier in the year at the Tokyo Olympics twice, once in the groups and once in the latter rounds.

The group game ended in a 0-0 draw, and the second game was in the bronze medal match, the Matildas first participation in that game ever.

They fought hard, but eventually went down 4-3 and went home empty handed.

Matildas vs USA 2024 Olympics kick off time, live stream

There are no shortage of options for Matildas fans wanting to watch this huge Olympics matchup, with the game being available both on free-to-air television and to stream.

Channel 9 will be showing the match on their main channel, as well as their free-to-use streaming service 9Now.

Stan Sport will also be streaming the game, with no ad-breaks during play.

Unfortunately another unsavoury kick-off time awaits Matildas fans back home, with the match against the USA slated to begin at 3:00 a.m. AEST on Thursday August 1.

Fans are at least getting used to it, as Australia's other group games also began at the same time.

This means the match will begin at 4:30 a.m. in Adelaide and 3:00 a.m. in Perth; the match itself is being played at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, where the Matildas opening game against Germany took place.
