McDonald's restaurants across Australia are currently unable to process payments as the fast-food chain grapples with an apparent global outage impacting its internal systems.

A McDonald's Australia spokesperson told the ABC the company was aware of the problem and was working to fix it.

"We are aware of a technology outage currently impacting our restaurants nationwide and are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible," they said.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and thank customers for their patience."

Some restaurants are accepting cash payments while the company works to address the issue, which began around 4:30pm AEDT and is also affecting the MyMacca's app.

Others stores have begun turning customers away.

"We cannot take any orders, our systems are down — this is a national issue atm [at the moment]," read a sign posted on the door of one closed store.

Reports have also appeared on social media that staff at some restaurants have been sent home.

McDonald's restaurants in other countries are also being impacted by technical issues, with reports of stores being closed in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, China, South Korea and Germany.

McDonald's in Japan has also reported a "system failure".
