Roosters coach Trent Robinson has addressed his side’s poor record against the top teams, denying it’s psychological, following another loss to the Storm on Saturday night.

The Roosters have one win from 20 matches against Penrith and Melbourne since 2020, but Robinson denied the problem was mental.

The poor run continued on Saturday with a 24-8 loss to the Storm, who the Tricolours have beaten just once in their past 10 attempts.

Robinson was asked if he believed it was a mental block stopping his players from beating the top sides, but he was having none of it.

“It’s pretty simple, we need to improve there,” he said.

“It’s been pretty close the last couple of games, a kick in it in the semi-final, but we just have to get over that, there’s no use dwelling on it too much.

“There’s still some footy to be played and it’s up to us to get over that, it’s pretty simple.

“There’s not a psychology around that or when we play them… the time will come.”

The Roosters have now lost to the Storm twice this season and Robinson was asked what he learned on Saturday ahead of a potential showdown in finals.

“There are some good lessons for us about the way we approach the game, so we need to improve that,” Robinson said.

“And just look forward to it, look forward to the challenge.

“If they come around again later in the year we’ll come back to this game and the one earlier in the year and have a look at it and take our lessons and look for continued improvement.”

Storm coach Craig Bellamy was proudest of his side’s defence after it restricted a Roosters side that had racked up over 40 points in consecutive games to just eight.

“I thought we started the season off ok with our defence but probably the last four or five weeks it hasn’t been where we would’ve wanted it,” Bellamy said.

“I thought we were really good tonight actually, our defence, to keep the Roosters to eight is a particularly good effort, especially we had a few changes before the game as well.

“I just thought our effort defensively and getting to the contest and then being effective in the contest was the best it’s been for a fair while so that’s the thing that pleased me the most.”
