The 67-year-old was last seen on Wednesday at 1:30pm local time when he set off for a coastal walk along St Nicholas Beach on the island.

His wife Clare Bailey reported him missing when he failed to return by 7:30pm that evening.

Greek authorities have started a wide search and rescue for the science journalist, with an Athens helicopter deployed to assist the efforts.

Locals have also joined the search, with the 16km wide sparsely populated rocky island home to 2,500 residents.

What have authorities said?

A statement from local police, which has been translated, said they were informed about the "disappearance of the 67-year-old British national on the island" on Wednesday.

It opened an investigation to find him and clarified that a search is being "carried out by the Fire Brigade with the assistance of forces of the Hellenic Police, Civil Protection (a local and regional coordination agency), volunteers and a police dog".

"We are working on the assumption that he might have been affected by the heat, that he might have slipped and fallen perhaps from a height. Right now nothing is being ruled out," the chief police officer said, according to the Guardian.

They said drones are also used to help locate Mosley and CCTV footage is being reviewed for any sign of him.

Symi mayor Eleftherios Papakalodoukas expressed concern that Mosley was no longer on the island, due to the wide search and small size of the island.

"It is a very small, controlled area, full of people. So if something happened to him there, we would have found him by now," he told BBC News.
