Here's what we know about the search operation and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance so far.

Where is the island?

The picturesque island of Symi sits on the eastern side of the Aegean Sea, about 6.5 kilometres from Türkiye's coast.

The rocky island is 16 kilometres long and home to about 2,500 residents.

What's known about the search?

A broad search and rescue operation has been underway on the small island since Wednesday.

Police, firefighters, and volunteers are looking for Mosley, with the help of a sniffer dog, drones and a helicopter.

Officers are also searching CCTV footage for any signs of him.

The rescue operation is focusing on the Pedi area, north-east of Symi.

It's where a woman reported seeing Mosley on Wednesday, the island's deputy mayor Ilias Chaskas told BBC News.

Where was Mosley last seen?

Mosley was last seen at 1:30pm on Wednesday, local time, when he went for a short stroll on his own from Agios Nikolaos beach to the fishing village of Pedi.

Police say he took a coastal path, which is about 1.5 kilometres long and takes 20 minutes to walk.

Mosley's wife, Claire, reported him missing on Thursday morning after he did not return.

An appeal posted on a Facebook group on Wednesday included a photo of Mosley standing on a beach wearing a cap, polo shirt, shorts and a backpack.

"Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick's at about 13:30 and failed to make it home," the post said.

An update to the post on Thursday morning said Mosley had still not been found and the search for him was ongoing.

"Update 11am Thursday. A search and rescue team is coming from Athens with drones and other more sophisticated equipment to extend the search. They are expected to arrive by about 1pm," it read.

What are the conditions like?

It was extremely hot in Symi on the day Mosley went missing.

The National Observatory of Athens reported temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius at 3pm, local time, on Wednesday.

Deputy Mayor Chaskas said the Pedi area is considered dangerous, but that Mosley had been seen on the road in a safer part of the village.

Mayor Eleftherios Papakalodoukas told the BBC that firefighters believed it was "impossible" for Mosley to still be in the area.

"It is a very small, controlled area, full of people. So if something happened to him there, we would have found him by now," he said.

Cr Papakalodoukas said he believed that Mosley had either followed a different path or fallen into the sea.

The majority of beaches on Symi are remote and people are advised to take boats to visit them.

Parts of the island are extremely rocky and difficult to hike.
