Molly the magpie was found on the ground at a Gold Coast dog park when he was just a chick.

Juliette and Reece Wells took him in and raised him alongside Peggy the staffy.

The pair forged a friendship that captivated the world, Peggy even producing milk for Molly.

Juliette and Reece shared their antics on social media, including the magpie's now famous 'bark'.

After years of the unusual pair living together, environmental officers from the Queensland government seized Molly.

"We did everything in our power to work with the department," Reece told A Current Affair.

Today the couple spoke to A Current Affair to address criticism of Molly's care.

"Were there ever any issues between Molly and your dogs?" A Current Affair asked.

"Oh god no, not at all never," Reece said.

He then responded to the question that Molly was a wild animal and should not be living in a domestic setting, insisting Molly came and left their home as he wanted.

"He had the best of both worlds. He was living outside, he was hanging with his friends outside, he was hunting and gathering on his own. He'd come occasionally for snacks but then he'd come back and say g'day," Reece.

"The day the wildlife officers came for us to surrender him, he wasn't here so they left without him.

"The day Juliette surrendered him he flew in the morning, then Juliette put him in the crate and took him down to Burleigh and surrendered him."
