New Zealand vs Pakistan

New Zealand will face Pakistan in the 35th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday. The PAK vs NZ clash will take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru from 10:30 AM IST onwards.

The fortunes of New Zealand and Pakistan went through sharp curves after a bright beginning, leaving them in a tight spot in the race to the semifinals of the quadrennial big bash.

The Kiwis started the tournament with four wins on the bounce and it looked a matter of time before they sealed a last four berth. Since that point, they have fallen to three defeats in a row against India, Australia and South Africa and are now stranded at eight points from seven matches.

On the other side, Pakistan are in an even dingier space with six points from seven matches and they need to win mandatorily against New Zealand and England.

Apart from the dwindling on-field returns, New Zealand will also have to deal with a tall obstacle ahead of their clash with Pakistan – a growing injury list that has five names in it already.

However, on a positive note, New Zealand Cricket said that Mark Chapman (calf), Lockie Ferguson (achilles), Jimmy Neesham (wrist) and Kane Williamson (thumb) all trained in Bengaluru on Friday and "a decision on their availability to feature against Pakistan will be left until game-day and likely confirmed at the toss."

New Zealand middle-order batsman Daryl Mitchell said on Friday that they need to pursue the Black Caps way of cricket to find their feet again in the World Cup.

"For us, it's just showing up and playing the Black Cap style of cricket that we want to play. I'm sure if we can control those little things and do them for long periods of time, then we'll go a long way to getting some outcomes which we want. Hopefully, it means we're in the mix coming into the tournament," Mitchell said.

"We're a small country, down the bottom of the Earth, and for us it's fighting for every ball, chasing every ball to the boundary, and doing the little things that we can control. The big stuff will look after itself if we're clear on our roles," he added.

Pakistan's chances of entering the World Cup semifinals hangs by a slim thread and Director of Cricket Mickey Arthur on Friday made a blunt assessment of his side's performance terming it well below par.

"I'll be brutally honest. I don't think we've played to our full potential in this tournament. I thought the Bangladesh game (on October 31 at Kolkata) is the first game where we actually put a complete game together. I just hope that's not too late for us," remarked Arthur during the pre-match press conference.

Arthur said not being able to strike a balance between the three faculties of the game – batting, bowling and fielding – has been the bane of Pakistan in this tournament.

"We batted beautifully, bowled beautifully, and fielded beautifully (against Bangladesh), which in all the other games, we've done one or two disciplines OK, but our other disciplines let us down."

"So, I'd like to think we're peaking, but the preparation and attitude of the guys will get better every day, that has been exceptional. I can't fault anybody in terms of that," he said.

Arthur also said they will take a call on Shadab Khan, who had suffered concussion at Chennai during the match against South Africa, at an appropriate time. Arthur said the leg-spinner has gone through an initial medical test without much issue.
