The Irish singer was performing in Brisbane on the first stop of his Australian tour when he cracked open a cold one and sculled it from his shoe.

"We're doing the shoey," he said, taking off one of his sneakers on stage.

"I apologise to Tamzin in wardrobe because this shoe won't be able to be worn for a while."

After splashing most of the drink on himself, he summed up the experience by saying: "you lot are lunatics".

"That's the first time I've ever done a shoey - I won't forget that one either," he said.

Pop stars Harry Styles and Lizzo were among the international acts who gave in to one of the nation's grossest traditions while touring in 2023.

American rapper and singer Post Malone said he was attempting a world record of shoeys on stage in Brisbane in November, downing seven from various shoes from the crowd.

Meanwhile, Horan also got into the spirit with an "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi" chant while carrying the Australian flag, before heading to Australia Zoo and getting up close with wildlife in the sunshine state.

It's yet to be seen whether the "shoey" will become a fixture of his Australian shows, with Sydney and Melbourne to welcome Horan in the first week of May.
