Nicho Hynes looks set for a stint on the sideline for the Sharks after suffering a "serious" ankle injury at training.

The halfback fell awkwardly and was reportedly carried out of the session by Cronulla teammates, according to 9News Sydney journalist Sam Djodan.

The club have since confirmed that Hynes will be sent for scans and 9News cameras spotted Hynes getting around on crutches and wearing a moon boot.

"The Sharks confirm reports in relation to a training injury suffered by Nicho Hynes earlier today," a statement said.

"Hynes injured an ankle late in today's Sharks training session at PointsBet Stadium and will be sent for scans to assess the extent of the issue.

"The Sharks will communicate more information when available."

Cronulla teammate Will Kennedy admitted the setback wasn't ideal for the club.

"He's strong-minded Nicho, I think if we all get around him he will be sweet," he said.

"We all love him, but it's not something you want to see at training."

His potential absence would be yet another blow for a Sharks side that have lost five of their last six matches.

Cronulla will already be without enforcer Siosifa Talakai, who has accepted a one-week ban for a high shot on Titans hooker Sam Verrills in Coffs Harbour on Friday night.

Daniel Atkinson has been put on standby for Friday night's clash at PointsBet Stadium.

The Sharks sit fourth on the NRL ladder, but a loss to the Tigers could see them drop as low as sixth in an extremely tight race into the finals.

Hynes earned a State of Origin recall for the Blues in this year's series opener, but has battled form since he was axed for game two.

He won the Dally M Medal in 2022 but endured a disappointing campaign last year.
