Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos is closing in on a monster contract extension that’d make him the “highest paid 21-year old player” in the game’s history.

AFL journalist Damian Barrett revealed on Channel 9’s Footy Classified that Daicos, who’s already contracted for another two seasons, is in talks to add another four years to his deal and tie him to the Magpies until 2029.

It’s also possible the last two years of the short-priced Brownlow Medal favourite’s current contract could be effectively voided and made as a fresh six-year deal to reflect the generational stud’s remarkable form.

“This would make him the highest-paid 21-year-old player in the history of the game, and by a fair margin,” Eddie McGuire said on Footy Classified.

Daicos, who doesn’t turn 21 until January, signed a four-year deal with Collingwood after he was drafted with Pick 4 as a father-son selection in 2021.

Though Barrett noted the numbers of the new deal are yet to be ticked off, the term and structure have been agreed upon in principle from both parties.

The Herald Sun meanwhile revealed the new CBA deal – that could be struck within the next two weeks – would provide greater clarity on clubs’ salary cap arrangement from 2026 onwards – when Daicos’ prospective new contract would be active.

“The flexibility that allows for Collingwood. We’re going to have the bump in the CBA when that comes in a couple of years,” Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel noted on Footy Classified.

“By stretching it out over that time while they’re in the premiership window, you can go shopping again.”

The Herald Sun also stated there’s still some separation over the financial element of Daicos’ extension, but suggested 2022 Rising Star winner was likely to be one of the AFL’s next $1 million players.

Magpies footy boss Graham Wright last week shut down reports that Daicos had a $100,000 Brownlow bonus in this year’s contract, claiming second-year players are under a mandatory CBA agreement.

It’s believed the son of a gun’s current deal could only earn him as much as $250,000 as a base wage plus $5000 per game in match payments as a second-year player.

Daicos earlier this year signed a new endorsement deal with Nike, who’s Collingwood main apparel brand, making him one of the biggest off-field earners in the game.

Melbourne great Garry Lyon suspected Daicos would eventually become the AFL’s first $2 million player from all his combined income.

“People out there that know this stuff better than me might tell me differently. I don’t know if Dusty (Martin) would’ve made $2 million combined on and off field,” Lyon said on SEN radio.

“Buddy (Franklin), I doubt whether he’s made $2 million on and off field.

“I reckon Nick Daicos might be the first $2 million (player). And good on him and luck to him.

“(He plays for a) Big club, imagine how many supporters he’s dragging through the joint – not that the Magpies fans need much encouragement to get along and support their footy club.

“But he’s the future.”

Essendon legend Tim Watson meanwhile thinks Daicos deserves to be paid around the seven-figure mark in his new deal with the Magpies.

“He’s not going to go anywhere ... but you don’t want to be disrespectful in what you’re offering him and abuse the position,” Watson told SEN.

“He’s around $1 million. If he you compared him other midfielders and his influence on games, he should be paid as high as any midfield player in the game right now, based on that.

“Because he is such a good marketing package, he is going to get the potential through his connection to the Collingwood Football Club and what he does and the success they look like they’re going to have over the next few years, to able to elevate himself out there in the market place.

“Whereby he’s going to get greater opportunities outside his football contract.”

Daicos’ older brother, Josh, who’s eligible for free agency next year, is also believed to be closing in on a long-term extension with Collingwood as long as six years.
