The Sydney Morning Herald reports the players came face-to-face early in the morning, with centre Kotoni Staggs and lock Pat Carrigan involved in a heated verbal exchange with Leniu.

Leniu was reportedly removed from the situation by the Roosters’ media manager and the incident didn’t become physical. Both teams were staying at the Hilton in Resorts World, with the NRL placing both teams on the same floor.

The reported clash comes after several teammates and players from other clubs publicly voiced their support for Mam, who was said to be “in tears” over the incident.

Leniu, though, has denied wrong-doing, telling Triple M post-match he was “not worried at all” by the incident and claimed it was “nothing”.

Leniu could be facing a “very long holiday” if found guilty of the alleged racial slur, according to veteran reporter Phil Rothfield who has also revealed details of how the NRL will investigate the matter.

Broncos five-eighth Mam’s complaint which was made to referee Adam Gee during the second game of the season in Las Vegas, won by the Roosters 20-10.

Following a melee in the second half, Gee called over captains James Tedesco and Adam Reynolds, revealing Mam’s complaint and putting Leniu on report.

Speaking on the Big Sports Breakfast, Rothfield said the NRL will be analysing footage and audio on Monday to get to the bottom of the incident.

“They’ve done a lot of work on it over the years, educating players. They will not leave a stone unturned to get to the bottom of what happened,” he said.

“If Spencer Leniu is found guilty of saying what’s been alleged, I think he’s facing a very, very long holiday on the sidelines.

“We have so many wonderful Indigenous athletes in our game, and we have to stand up and support them as strong as we possibly can.

“The NRL are going to be working on it all day here, they won’t rush into a decision. They need the technology people to go through all the tapes.

“They will also speak to other players who were close by, I just hope they get to the bottom of it ASAP.”

Johnathan Thurston said on Channel 9 post game that he’d heard Mam was “in tears” over the incident and Rothfield echoed his comments.

He explained that the gun playmaker had been left feeling “really, really bad” after the game, with teammates and rival players throwing their support behind him on social media.

“I stand with you Bala,” Latrell Mitchell wrote in a post. “(The NRL) better deal with this s***.” While Reece Walsh wrote: “Got you always my brother.”

Walsh, meanwhile, told 9News: “It’s disgusting to still have that stuff in our game.

“I really feel for one of my good mates. It’s heat of the moment, and we understand that, but it’s not good enough.”

Players also seemed to be critical of Leniu’s comments on the incident.

Following the comments rivals — including Staggs, Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker — once again took to social media to share their thoughts.

Rothfield added the NRL will “go through every bit of audio and try to enhance it.”

“They will go through video of the incident and maybe even bring in a lip-reading expert. The thing is, Spencer Leniu is denying it but Ezra Mam, this was so sad.

“He was in tears after the game, he is a really proud Indigenous man and I spoke to a couple of players last night and long after the team got back to the hotel here.

“He was still down and feeling really, really bad about what happened. So I know how strong the NRL is in regards to racism.”

Speaking to News Corp, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys explained the NRL “will not tolerate any form of racism... full stop”.

“At the same time, the player has to be given due process and natural justice so it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further,” he said.

“But we take these matters seriously.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson was also asked about the incident post-match and said: “So Ezra is adamant… that doesn’t mean it’s right. He obviously made the complaint but that doesn’t mean that it’s right, it will go through the formal process as it should”.
