Losses at the United Cup to The UK's Cameron Norrie and Australia's Alex De Minaur were not what he would have wanted coming into the tournament.

A tough draw hasn't helped either.

Nadal has a rising star of the sport in 21-year-old Brit Jack Draper.

Ranked 38 in the world Draper just missed out on being seeded and made the semifinals in Adelaide, where he lost to eventual champion Soon Woo Kwon.

The Spanish great has also been vocal in the lead up to this tournament about how much he dislikes the Dunlop balls, saying they lose pressure after a couple of shots and favour players who hit the ball flat, so this looms as a massive test for the Spanish great.

That was tough but last year's runner up Danielle Collins is through to the second round after surviving an injury scare.

Collins got past Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 and only needed one match point to take the victory but Collins was under the pump.

The American had her nerves frayed throughout the match and repeatedly shrieked in frustration and whacked her racket on the court before getting through a tough opening round.

"Anytime you are on the court for three hours you especially want to win putting that much effort in," Collins said.

"The finish, it was tough, you'd rather be lucky than good but she was good and she was lucky.

"She didn't give me any free points."

Collins suffered a knee injury in the first set but said she was feeling better at the end of the match.

"I have had a meniscus tear and a cartilage tear in this knee but I just had to play through it a bit but the physio's do a great job so thanks to them."

Collins will play either Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko or Czech Karolina Muchova in the second round.

There's a bit of noise about how good Chinese teenager Junchen Shang could be and after making his way through qualifying, the 17-year-old has cruised into the second round of the main draw.

Shang took down German veteran Oscar Otte 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (7/2), 7-5 in a tick under three hours, after Otte saved match point a bit earlier.

Shang was the top ranked junior for a time and is the youngest qualifier at a men's singles grand slam since current number one Carlos Alcaraz at the 2021 Australian Open.

He'll likely face US star Frances Tiafoe in the second round.

Danielle Collins, who was runner-up in 2022 to Ash Barty copped a tough opening round draw in Russia's Anna Kalinskaya and the match is living up the billing.

After Collins took the opening set 7-5, Kalinskaya took the second with the same score to force a third set.

It's currently on serve in the third with the American looking decidedly uneasy and on edge.

Much has been made of 20-year-old Australian Olivia Gadecki having Ash Barty as a mentor and on day one it worked out well for the Australian.

Gadecki got her first win at a grand slam in her first main draw match as she accounted for Russian qualifier  Polina Kudermetova 7-5, 6-1.

Gadecki was excellent and showed very few nerves in the win and seized the opening set against Kudermetova with the only break of the set, nailing a booming backhand down the line in the 12th game to draw rapturous applause from spectators on Court 8.

The adrenaline surge triggered a run of six straight games won for Gadecki as the young gun powered to victory in 76 minutes.

Gadecki's reward is a second-round shot at exciting Ukrainian talent Marta Kostyuk on Wednesday.
