OpenAI’s popular artificial intelligence tool, ChatGPT, experienced a global outage on early Thursday morning, leaving some users around the world unable to log into the platform.

The company, which is backed by Microsoft, acknowledged the disruption in a post on social network X, assuring users that a fix was underway. “We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we’ll keep you updated!” OpenAI’s official account stated early on Thursday morning.

The outage reportedly also impacted OpenAI’s newly launched Sora AI model, which enables users to create videos from text prompts.

With an estimated 123 million daily active users, ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used generative AI applications globally. Initially released in late 2022, the tool quickly gained traction, amassing over one million users within 24 hours of launch.

This latest incident follows outages reported earlier in the week on Meta’s Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.

Downdetector, a website that tracks real-time service interruptions, indicated that both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s websites were experiencing issues, with most user complaints centred around ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s latest online status update on Thursday morning indicated that its “API, ChatGPT & Sora [are] Facing Issues.”

Just before 8am UAE time, OpenAI posted a further update stating that its “API, ChatGPT, and Sora traffic has largely recovered.”

“We are monitoring the situation to ensure full resolution,” said OpenAI in the status update.
