Oscar Piastri has been praised for maturity in his rookie season, after achieving top-five finishes in consecutive races.

The Melbourne-born McLaren driver finished fifth in Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, backing up a fourth-place finish at the British Grand Prix a fortnight prior.

It has been an impressive performance by the rookie driver, who has climbed to 11th in the drivers' championship.

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown heaped praise on the 22-year-old after his latest drive.

"He's very calm, he's very mature for his age and being a rookie and he's a student," Brown told Sky Sports UK.

"When you watch him over the weekend, he looks at the data, he understands, he asks questions, he's calm, [and] then he goes out and applies it the next run of the next day.

"He's a very mature driver who doesn't worry about the Friday morning lap time."

Piastri showed plenty of that maturity after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

He was running second in Hungary for the first 18 laps but then struggled with tyre degradation, ultimately dropping to fifth.

In a post-race interview, he said he was struggling for pace and wanted to analyse where he could improve.

"Just lacking a lot of pace, not too sure why at the moment," he said.

"Just struggled a lot with the tyres so something to review.

"I feel like I did a lot of good work in the first stint, and then just really struggled the next two.

"Happy to hang onto [fifth], at one point I thought we were going to be even further back than that.

"We'll have a look at what I could've done better. Obviously, the car is capable of more than that."
