Australian captain Pat Cummins has drawn comparisons between the Test team's winning mentality to their ODI World Cup 2023 triumph in November last year. Cummins pointed out that his side has been able to find ways to win despite facing tough circumstances.
Cummins led Australia to a 2-0 Test series win over New Zealand as the visitors made a stellar comeback in the second Test in Christchurch to register a 3-wicket win. The Australians have been on a roll ever since they became the 6-time world champions. They registered a 3-0 clean-sweep against Pakistan in Tests and went on to level the Test series 1-1 against West Indies. The visitors suffered a 3-0 and 2-1 loss in ODIs and T20Is respectively to the hosts.
Australia continued their winning run as a touring side as well, continuing their domination over the Blackcaps in red-ball cricket with their 7th consecutive series win. However, all the wins were not a smooth sail for the team, just like their World Cup campaign. The Cummins-led side won the ODI World Cup after losing their initial 2 matches in the tournament. The team instilled a come-from-behind mentality and continued to play with the same approach.
"At times we haven't played our best cricket, but still found a way to win," Cummins said in the post-match press conference.
"No doubt a few of them will look back and wish they had scored a few more runs over the last couple of games, but basically everyone in the line-up has won a match this summer."
"In a couple of previous summers, we'd blown teams out of the water, and this summer it wasn't the case but still at the key moments, someone's stood up," he said.
"It's similar to the ODI World Cup, you keep finding a way to win even if at times it's not fully functioning, the whole unit."
Cummins has been having a great time at the helm of Australia's ODI and Test team as he keeps on adding feathers to his already decorated hat. Under his captaincy, Australia clinched the ODI World Cup, World Test Championship and retained the Ashes in 2023.
