The early dismissals of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne has put the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan back in the balance on day three in Melbourne.

The hosts are 2-6 at lunch, leading by 60 runs, with opener David Warner (1*) unbeaten in the middle.

Australia’s second innings got off to a horror start, with Pakistan seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi removing Khawaja for a second-ball duck, nicking a gorgeous outswinger through to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan in the first over.

Then on the final delivery before the lunch break, Labuschagne tickled a wayward delivery from Afridi through to Rizwan, strangled down the leg-side for 4.

Earlier in the morning session, Pakistan was bowled out for 264 to give Australia a 54-run first innings lead. The start of day three was delayed due to rain, but Rizwan and Aamir Jamal survived the first half-hour when play resumed.

Rizwan was looking in ominous touch before a captaincy masterstroke from Pat Cummins in the 63rd over, placing an additional fielder at short cover moments before Rizwan was caught in that exact position for 42.

Shaheen Shah Afridi provided some valuable runs in an entertaining cameo, slapping a career-best 21 before falling victim to Nathan Lyon, wrapped on the pads by a flatter delivery from the veteran off-spinner.

Cummins secured his tenth five-wicket haul in Tests by recreating the unplayable delivery that knocked over Babar Azam the previous day, bowling Hasan Ali with an absolute peach that nipped back into off stump for 2.

After a patient start with the bat, Jamal switched gears and went on the attack, steering Pakistan past 250 with a late flurry of boundaries. He cracked an unbeaten 33 before Alex Carey wrapped up the innings by stumping tailender Mir Hamza for 2, giving Lyon his fourth wicket of the innings.
