‘Do not send aircraft’: Perth Airport plunged into chaos amid fuel delivery issues

Perth Airport has been plunged into chaos, with more than a dozen flights cancelled, airlines told not to send aircraft and passengers across the country left stranded as it grapples with a major refuelling issue.

In a statement released on Saturday, a spokesperson from the airport said it was experiencing a delivery issue with fuel supplies to aircraft.

The airport confirmed the issue had forced the cancellation of nine international flights and five domestic flights, with further trips expected to be impacted.

“The issue is causing a lack of pressure in fuel lines and local experts have been working to resolve the issue,” the spokesperson said.

“Further cancellations are expected and in-bound flights which have not already left their departure points will also be impacted.

“Airlines have been advised not to send aircraft to Perth Airport until further notice unless they have sufficient fuel to make a return flight.

“Passengers are being urged to contact their airlines for information about their flights.

“Perth Airport apologises for the inconvenience to passengers and our airline partners.”

It is understood the lack of pressure in the fuel system has prevented aircraft from being refuelled, with operations impacted from the early hours of Saturday morning.

Hundreds of travellers at terminal four are affected.

It comes less than 24 hours after Perth Airport announced a $5 billion deal with Qantas to upgrade the airport with a new terminal and runway in a bid to facilitate up to 4.4 million extra passenger movements annually.

More to come.
