Perth Airport: QF71 tore up main runway after taking off for Singapore, repairs underway

Urgent repair works are underway at Perth Airport after a Qantas plane tore up part of the main runway when taking off on Sunday.

The airport confirmed the main runway was partly operational on Sunday afternoon after a video emerged of Qantas flight QF71 appearing to damage the runway as it took off around 12.15pm.

In the vision, as the plane accelerates from a stationary position, parts of the runway appear to be sent flying into the air.

“Earlier today, pavement damage on the Main Runway was identified in a safety inspection following a departing aircraft,” an airport spokesperson said.

“Pavement maintenance works are now underway.”
